  • Your Top Non-Summit Views in the ADK High Peaks

Regarding views in the Adirondack High Peaks region, I often see the discussion about top N summit views (e.g. from Haystack). Since there are many great views to be had in the high peaks off-summit, I thought I'd solicit people's top 5 or 10 views in the high peaks which are not from a summit. They could be either from the trail, herdpath, or from a bushwhack.

I was pondering this during lunch today, so to get the ball rolling here are mine (in no particular order):

    * Avalanche Lake from Avalanche Pass
    * Panorma of the Flowed Lands
    * Lower Ausable Lake from the dam
    * Indian Pass and Wallface Mtn from Scott Clearing
    * Panorama across Heart Lake from the Indian Pass Trail
    * View from Marcy Dam (pre-Irene)
    * Rainbow Falls (from the base)
    * View from the Trap Dyke back towards Avalanche Lake
    * View from Adirondack Loj road (esp. at sunset)
    * Rocky Falls off Indian Pass Trail

We are closer now than we were five minutes ago

Trail Boss, the view from Uphill Brook was the first that came to mind.

          Ditto....

Also a few other favorites of mine are:

The view of the Macs' from Indian Falls
          The view from Duck Hole
The view off of the first brother on the way up Big Slide.
Pretty much anything above the washbowl on the Zander Scott ridge trail.
          (the washbowl is also pretty)

Some great ones named so far. Looking up at all the slides on the NE side of Dix from the Round Pond trail crossing is pretty good. So is the view of the Macs from the open south ridge of Macnaughton. View back to the Four Corners area & surrounding peaks from the open slide/brook on the way up Marshall is nice. Looking up at Marcy from Lake Tear is memorable. East bowl of Giant from various points on RPR is A+. Can't forget the Noonmark Diner from Rt. 73 after an exhausting day. Good times, good times.

Not sure if this counts, but the views from the Lake Placid turn and Wilmington turn on the Whitface Toll Road are my faves (as well as some of the lower overlooks).

                  • View from anywhere on the Jay Mountain ridge (although I don't know if you count that as being in the High Peaks Region)
                  • Avalanche Pass & Lake Colden
                  • Fish Hawk Cliffs
                  • False Summit Bump on the East Side of Wyman (marked elev. 809 on the topo map)

These are slight twists on things that have already been posted:
                      • The 360 degree view from the center of Avalanche Lake, in winter
                      • The view of Indian Head from Fish Hawk Cliffs
                      • Not too far above the washbowl on the Zander Scott trail, there is a view that includes the washbowl, the Great Range, and the Dix Range
                      • View of the Macs from the Tabletop herd path
