  • Best free photo album site?

What's the best free photo/social site for sharing photo albums? Google Photos seems great if all your friends are on Google, Facebook probably has something similar. Blogs like wordpress probably have something too. What's the best place to post a few dozen pictures, and have people view them in an album format? Difficulty: people shouldn't have to belong to YOUR social media network.

Google Blogger works well and is pretty simple to use.

Using the Google suite you can also set up view only, shareable documents which essentially function as independent web pages with their own URL's and picture links. I've never had any space issues using either format, and they can be kept private, public, viewable to certain people, or open source(ish) where others with your document access can edit them.

FFaB, do you mean the Google Photos "app" ? I tried using it but those kind of features didn't jump out at me... but maybe I didn't look that hard. Or do you mean a Google blog page, that acts as a photo album to those same pictures? I found that if you share a photo, you get some goo.gl link that doesn't give you a straight up .jpg file, but rather some Googly page that has your picture in it - so you can't just hotlink to the photo from here for instance.

TB, I did try out Flickr which seems pretty cool as well.

        Thanks for both ideas guys.

FWIW, the bulk of my shared photos are posted on Microsoft OneDrive. I used it for 5 years ... until May 2015. Then Microsoft shot itself in the foot.

For years, people would upload photos to OneDrive and use it for photo-hosting. They'd display the photos in their blogs and on forums like this one by using an URL pointing to the photo on OneDrive. Photo is physically in one place but can be displayed in umpteen other different places.

Without telling its clients, Microsoft quietly changed the way a photo's URL worked. It would expire in 24-48 hours! People began noticing photos were disappearing from their blogs and wherever else they used a photo URL. It took a while for folks like myself (after a fair amount of experimentation) to figure out what was happening because Microsoft never ever admitted to it. They behaved like it wasn't something they did but due to end-user error. The disingenuous people who call themselves "Microsoft Support" even instructed clients to create new OneDrive accounts in an attempt to solve their problem (a close cousin to the old "please re-install Windows" solution). Problems with your bank account? No problem. Please create a new account.

Exasperated with Microsoft's obtuse "Support" (I swear they get paid to simply respond and nothing more; no matter if the response is utterly useless), I posted on UserVoice to "bring back static URLs": https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forum...iles-currently

NINE MONTHS LATER, they fixed it (more or less). Throughout that period they never acknowledged it was due to something they changed at their end. I gave up on them after the first month and switched to Flickr. If you check the thread I started on UserVoice, the complaining continues to this day despite the fact the Group Program Manager closed the issue with a ridiculous "Boom! It's done!" tag. Nine months to fix something is not "Boom!"

Now you know why I never suggested Microsoft OneDrive for photo sharing despite the fact they advertise a comprehensive feature-set, equivalent to Google Drive, and provide 5 gigabytes of free storage. Once burned twice PO'd.

I'm not sure I follow you there, but I've used google photos for a couple/few years now. It's all online web based no app, and the other parties don't have to be members or anything. You can look at an album page or just an individual photo. For example:
Here is an album of my Great Range trip https://plus.google.com/photos/10459...21279546542961

Here is a link to just one photo https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/82...20-h1200-rw-no

Or the same above photo hotlinked:

I'm not signed into my google account and can see these, so hopefully it is working ok because I have been using this method for a while...

Looks good - how did you get the actual 'jpg' link to the pic though?

Usually (for almost any image on the internet that allows hot linking) just right click on it and "copy image address" (different browsers might be worded differently or maybe not have this feature). Or on the right click menu there may be a "open in a new window or tab" then in the new window or tab should have the picture url in the address box that you can copy and paste from. Just make sure you're on the actual picture and not a clickable thumbnail or java/flash facade.

                  Barefoot-
Your individual pic didn't work on my iPhone, only the Google Drive icon showed up. However the folder did show up. But, the last image, a map, was unreadable. Of course, I can't right click on my iPhone!

FWIW, the pic in question isn't displayed by my PC's browser either (it displays an "X" icon which means a non-existent target URL).

The link to the photo album works.

The URL to the photo produces a page of gibberish.

FWIW, I tried another browser and all's well (photo is displayed; URL works).

I guess MS Edge has some sort of compatibility issue.

Oh well I suppose some things won't work with every browser unfortunately.

MTV, when you say the individual pic doesn't work are you referring to the link to the pic or the one I hotlinked to display on this page?
