  • Moose Mountain North Slide 7-22-17

On a sticky warm day, slide climbing partner Claudia and I ventured off to visit the slide on the North side of Moose Mountain.

Trail conditions are improving, drying. We started via the Jack Rabbit Trail The trail from the four way junction to the false summit before McKenzie is very eroded. On equal to what is seen in the high peaks. Beyond that the trail is in nice condition. The climb to Moose was much more gradual then I thought might occur looking from a distant lookout. We passed just 4 other hikers all day.

The round trip to visit the slide took about 3 hours. Down climbing we had to go around several cliffs which were easily avoided on the return. We descended after the slide ended down the brook until it leveled off then returned. The upper third is a mix of some slab and rubble. Below that the slab was very nice and low angle. Apparently this slide gets few visitors as indicated by the absence of cairns.
