ISOLATION, NOVEMBER 7 2009

During our breakfast, the sky lights up and reveal an almost cloudless sky. The day promises to be gorgeous. Today we are going to do Insulation, our 45th summit on our NH 4000 Footers list. We arrive early at the parking. The paths chosen were Rocky Branch Trail, Isolation and Davis Path Trail. With a little questioning, we start this hike and this because of the reputation of this mountain and know by what road we take to get to our destination. Some suggested bushwhack to do not to the 4th crossings. Not being fans of bushwhack, we are not sure how to begin these shortcuts. Finally, we have not found the reference for one, and the other at an altitude of 3200 feet. And we did not know exactly where to enter the woods. I am sorry Sabrina and Jeremy. This is our lack of experience and not by your good detailed advice.
Finally, we continued to the regular path without knowing what we expected. Firstly, we lost the trail before the first crossing. And with my GPS I found the path. We had to bushwhacked, to reach the trail. Annie was nervous and she was afraid that we are lost.
I knew that the 4 crossings on the trail Trail to Insulation are not easy to do during the high water. But this time of year, I did not know what to expect. The first crossing was very difficult. We lost a lot of time trying to find the best place to cross. Most rocks were covered with or they were too far apart from each other. And no way that we will to take off our boots to cross it, Brrrrrr !!!!!. I was not desperate, but I thought the worst. But finally we crossed it. The second was not easy, but not as bad as the first one. But the last 2 have been easy compare to the others. Finally, we reached the summit with the delay on my program. We must do bushwhacked for the return if we want to be back before dark and not having to repeat the 4 crossings. At the summit there was a group of a dozen people, we had passed on the trail Rocky Branch Trail. I am sorry I don’t remember all your names. Then several recognize me from VFTT and we began to talk. I ask them if they bushwhacked, and they say surely. So, I ask them to follow them for the return. After a short brake and some photos of the beautiful view we have and especially with the warmer weather and we were relieved to follow these people. We rejoin them at the first crossing, which was easy. Shortly after we entered the woods for the bushwhack in question. Not too dense with large sections fairly open with white birches. A few wet sections and 2 sections of dense conifers and we are through. Arriving at the trail, they stopped to take a break. We, after thanks and greetings, go immediately on our way back to the parking lot. Mentally and physically tired, but happy that we reach our goal of the 45th peak.
Now I am happy to say that Annie loves bushwhack. But this is half true. Annie told me that she like better to bushwhacked than repeating the 4 crossings. Back to the motel we take a shower, eat and rest for tomorrow’s hike, a short one Waumbek and make our NH46th summit.
Thank you again for those who helped me to prepared my hike and for those we join them for the return. I am sorry; please post your name here that I can remember it.
Merci beaucoup :)

Our finish is on our next trip to NH.

Wow, what a beautiful day you had. Very nice pics, how did you manage to get so close to the bird? Nice.

On several peaks in New Hampshire we often see Gray Jays. They do not fear humans because unfortunately the people feed them from their hands. They come very close to us and in this case, it was 4 feet from me.

Thank you Jim. :)
We are at 46 now, because we did Waumbek the next day. Yes we will go back to the ADK after we have completed the NH48 and also for continuing our 46W this winter.

Yvon & Annie,

Congratulations! Almost there now...

I'm sure you researched the routes to Isolation and chose this one because this looked "easier".

I took the other common approach by the Glen Boulder path up to the ridge and then down to Isolation by the Davis path. From the road it ascends to about 5300 feet before "climbing" for the summit at 4003 feet. In 12 miles out-and-back, it ascends 5100 feet! But it is dry all the way :D.

I was not sure the path we should take almost to the last minute, Glen Boulder or Rocky Branch Trail.
Yes, we are almost there. On our next trip we should complete the 48. :) :drink:
