Has this happened to you?
'Getting dinner ready and the phone rings. ''Can you donate to such and such...''
When the person says ''no'' the salesman says ''I know these are hard times, many are donating 10 dollars''
I think that declining is an option. My Forums are the exception though. Many members and guests love the TR's and pics that are shown.
It is ''free'' to all who see.Why not contribute to these gr8 Forums when there is no sales pitch ,and the gift to give helps restore Firetowers as well.Plz do not respond to this post.Respond to MAVS00 . looncry

'Getting dinner ready and the phone rings. ''Can you donate to such and such...''No it does not happen, because I am on the 'Do not call' registry. :D
I never donate to an organization that calls. Feel it may be a scam. try to check out orgs that I donate too; they are required to have their form 990's avaialble for public view. Check to see if they are registered in their state. Aren't charities exempt from the do not call? I am on the list but sometimes do get calls for donations

Indeed they are, and some of the definitions of 'charities' appear to be a bit fuzzy.

I'm unlisted, so I don't get many of these calls. On the rare occasions when I get such a call and I'm inclined to listen, if I am intrigued then I ask them to send me something. This allows me to read their material and verify that they're legit. More than once, the caller has balked at sending material, which I suspect is a sign that they're not quite above-board. I usually hang up at that point.

When I was at Paul Smith's, I spent some time working the telethon for the alumni association... calling alumni and asking for money. We had an entire flowchart in front of us that we would follow, based on their responses to what we said. Every conceivable type of response was included on the flowchart, and the whole thing was designed to get as much money as possible from the people we called, without pissing them off so much that they hung up and gave nothing.
That being said, out of the hundreds of people I called, most gave nothing, some gave 10 or 20 dollars, and one person gave 200 dollars.
Note: When you donate money to an organization, you can specify where you want the money to go.

one thing to keep in mind about the Do Not Call list is that your registration on it expires, and you have to sign up again, periodically.
I'm unlisted too but some of these orgs have dialers that just go down the line of numbers. I think I read somewhere that the feds are putting legislation in effect that prevent telemarketing with the same exceptions that the do not call list currently has

The auto-dialer ban went into effect on Sept. 1st - I believe it primarily limited what times the auto-dialer could be used, essentially around dinner time. I do not think this directly affects the telemarketers who iterate over the list of numbers sequentially, other than altering the time they could use the auto-dialer.

Yes, send me all your money, after all, I have a kid in college. :D
Oh, you meant the foundation.
As for phone solicitors, I almost NEVER give right then and there, Although, I have before. As for donations in general, I have found since being in the "begging" for money business that by and large............ People are extraordinarily generous.
I think the folks here and on ADKForum have really been very generous and supportive, even in these tough times. I also have been very {plesantly} surprise that certain people who I know think I (or Neil) are complete morons or disagree with many things we may say or do, will put that aside and still give for the greater cause. I think that is awesome and says a lot about them.
I also find that raising money is WAY easier when you GET SOMETHING IN RETURN. I don't mean that in a bad way, cuz I personally do the same. Much harder to fork over a fat check then it is to order 5 calendars at $16 even though I know that I'm paying a little more then I need to. I think that's why we try to do it like that as much as we can. The last silent auction was won at $840, for what amounts to a day walking or floating in the Adirondacks looking at the same stuff from a different angle.
In fact, it's probably about time for an update on how we are doing, doncha think? Since we started ramping up in mid-July, once the auction money comes in, we probably just on the "good side" of 4k raised.
That means the Tower money is in the bag, and now we're working on project two  All before the major calendar fundraiser even starts. We also still have a few cool items to sell/auction off too.
I know all of us in the foundation are grateful for the support, as are the recipients of our grants. Keep up the good work.

Also the good news is that we have neither the time nor intention of ever calling any member to solicit funds.............we prefer to do it in person, where do you live?:D
Just kidding. I am constantly blown away by the generosity of the members and non members to the foundation.
Thank you all

From now on then, when the solicitors ring my doorbell or call my phone, I'm gonna ask "What forum are you from and what's your screen name?" Then, I'm gonna turn them over to Mavs to be banninated. :D
