This is as basic as it gets but I have been trying for months to post photos with my TRs and I just can't figure it out. I opened a Webshots account since many forum members seem to use that. Now, how do I get my photos, or the link to them on Webshots, into my TRs?

Sorry to be a technological dinosaur but "I am what I am."

That is how I host my images when I want to post a pic here. I know you can do it through webshots but I dont do it that way.

BobI will assume you have a url (a link) for your photo album, or the first picture, or whatever.

Take that link and highlight it with the mouse, then click the right mouse button and press 'copy'. (This assumes Windows)

Then go to your TR. When you are composing it, type something like this:

Here are my awesome pictures!

Now highlight that line with the mouse. Then press the 'Insert link' button above this edit box, it looks like a globe with a chain link. A box will appear. Paste your link into that box, with shift-insert or right-mouse and 'paste'. Click OK. You should now have a link to your photos.

If you want to make them appear right here, you need the link of an actual photo. Press the yellow box above that looks like a mountain with the sun in the corner. Then paste in your photo link. Hit 'Preview' and make sure it works correctly.

Now, how do I get my photos, or the link to them on Webshots, into my TRs? I am also a webshots user, and their photo hosting service make posting photos in a forum very easy. I found your RockOn user profile on webshots, but noticed that you have not uploaded any public viewable photo albums yet. So I will use one of my photos as an example.

When you do upload photos to webshots and in the process create a new album, be sure to select "My public shoebox" as opposed to "My private shoebox". Your photos need to be in a public rather than a private album in order to allow everyone to view your photos and to post them in a forum post.

Once your public album exists go to the photo within your album that you want to post, such as this webshots photo page (http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2495793960102335886tOQZpk). Page down to where you see a "comment on this photo" entry area. To the right of this section is a group of links. Click on "Link to it". On the next page you will see a small 100 pixel wide thumbnail of the photo. Webshots allows you to post thumbnail images that are 100, 200, 425, 500, or 600 pixels wide. Select the size you want. You may click on the red "preview this size" link to preview the photo's size. Once you decide on the size click on the "post in a forum" field (the third of three possible link selections). That will highlight the complex link. Copy this to the clipboard (control-C in Windows based browsers). Paste this into your forum post (Control-V) entry screen. You do not need to try to understand the complexities of the link tags (which combines usages of URL and IMG tags). You can preview your forum post to see how the photo will appear.

Here are two sizes of my photo as examples (100 and 500 pixel widths):
http://thumb6.webshots.net/t/96/96/7/93/96/2495793960102335886tOQZpk_th.jpg (http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2495793960102335886tOQZpk)

http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/1075/2495793960102335886S500x500Q85.jpg (http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2495793960102335886tOQZpk)

Note that you can click on either of these two images, and it will bring up a new window or tab with my webshots page for that photo. This allows you to post a clickable thumbnail which provides other forum users the ability to enter your photo album to view larger images of your photo and to view the remainder of your photo album.

One other point. If at any time you want to discover how a forum user created their post (which tags they used); you may click the http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/images/buttons/quote.gif at the end of the post. You will then see most (usually all) of the tags they used to create their post. You can back out of that entry screen without actually quoting their post.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I will attempt to post some Marcy photos when I am done with this annoying work stuff. By the way, I thought I had posted my Marcy album to webshots already. I'll just work through it.

Once your public album exists go to the photo within your album that you want to post, such as this webshots photo page (http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2495793960102335886tOQZpk).

Mark,
How do you create a link that has the name instead of the path, like the one above, Webshots photo page? I see these in posts all the time -- the link says "boot sucking mud" and it links to a picture of same.

So if you click the quote button in this post, you'll see the code used to produce the effect you're looking for. Or you can use the shortcut: http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/images/editor/createlink.gif

Mark,

Thanks again, I followed your instructions. I did it, perhaps not in the cleanest fashion but the link is there and it worked. I feel so empowered!

Tom, I tried using these directions with a url link to a facebook pic and 'previewed' it with no luck. Can you help me?

Tom, I tried using these directions with a url link to a facebook pic and 'previewed' it with no luck. Can you help me?

Here is a random facebook link:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=30594584&id=1508742505

It seems to work fine. I brought up a picture, clicked the Right Mouse Button over the image and selected 'copy image location' in FireFox. Then I pasted it in above.

That's how I was doing it. How did Mark Schaefer get the pictures of the mushrooms to actually appear in thread?

That's how I was doing it. How did Mark Schaefer get the pictures of the mushrooms to actually appear in thread? In my case I was using one of my images on the webshots online photo hosting site. They have a convenient button that generates the necessary links. In addition to providing the image in the thread, the image is clickable and opens up a new window or tab with the image in my webshots album. The complex tag combines the use of the URL and IMG tags. You can click the QUOTE button on my prior post to see how it is done, One could do the same type of tag construction for other photo hosting websites.

In general you need to use the IMG and /IMG tags (with square brackets around them). In between you need the URL of the image. The URL must end with .jpg or .gif or perhaps a few other specific image extensions. The URL cannot be any other type of webpage (such as .htm).

If you are still not seeing the image in your post preview, than you are probably just missing the IMG tags. You can add them yourself or use the "mountain with the sun in the corner" button in the "reply to thread" editor (as Tom mentioned).

edit: One additional note. Some websites do not allow their images to be posted inline in forum threads (know as hot linking). I do not know if that is the case with facebook. I do not have a facebook account so I cannot signin to try it out.
