Small mountain but it's really all we had time for, and the constant drizzly of rain changed our longer trip into this one. We hadn't been on top of this one yet so without any GPS track loaded in and only a map to guide us we headed out.
We started along an old trail which is located just past the Old Mountain Road going toward Lake Placid. You can see it on the right just as you crest the small hill. Only a state forest sign and a No Motorized Vehicle sign mark its start.
We followed here for .25 miles until it made a sharp left (opposite direction of the mountain we wanted). From here it was all guess work through an open hardwood forest. The lay of the land is very flat with only slightest uphill. We figured if we headed left would eventually hit the ridge. Eventually we started a more agressive uphill climb. Agressive maybe an overstatement. well at least we were gaining elevation-didn't know if we were on the right mountain but we were going up. In fact we could only see a few hundred feet at a time it was so foggy. Well we finally got to the point where we couln't go up any more.
It was a semi-open summit, looked to be a huge round rocky floor under the 8-10 inches wet heavy snow. I bet there's decent views of the Sentinals from here as well as Marcy and the High Peaks. But all we could see were clouds.
We got back home and what do you know we were on the summit of Scotts Cobble to the X on the map-very cool.
