Hey all,

I'm planning on making a three-day weekend out of the Vermont 4,000 footers. Looking to work from north to south: Mansfield & its neighbors on day one, Camel's Hump and some nearby peaks on day 2, Abraham & Ellen on day three and maybe Killington on the way home. Any tips or suggestions on approaches? What campgrounds would you recommend? Also, I've got the GMC's Long Trail Guide but I'm in need of a good trail map. Any ideas?

A few of us did the 4krs in a 3 day weekend.

Go up friday night.
Saturday, do Abraham and Ellen as a traverse (car spot)
Sunday, do Camel's Hump and Mansfield as day hikes
Monday, do Killington on the way home...

try to go to Ben and Jerrys and we stayed at the place by Waterbury, close to Camel's Hump and basecamped there..

Hey Swede,

I have Map Adventures maps, one for the for the Northern Vermont region and another for Central Vermont. Trails are well marked and include distances.

Check them out at:

Have fun!

Is that a new Brewpub?I wish!

BTW, Swede, you should be able to get all 5 in a day! It would not be a first!

Oh, don't tempt me! I think if I make the big haul to Vermont, I should savor the mountaintops.

Did you basecamp there for all of them or did you move your camp around?

do em all in a day!!!
i have been considering this, the driving/car spotting logistics would suck, but could be done.
camp at underhill state park (mansfield) quick up and down, drive to camels hump (burroughs trail-quickest up and down) then over to ellen and abraham. have a car at abraham and drive to killington.
when you planning on doing this?:D

Aw man. It's something I would do in a day but I'd hate to rush through them, especially since it would be my first time hiking in Vermont. On top of that, it's a 6 hour drive for me.

Is Vermont near Upper Works?

Something like that. I hear it's only accessible by bushwhack.

Then what are we waiting for?

I hear they got 109 three thousand foot peaks over there.

Jeebus. At least it's not like the Adirondacks where you've got 4000 peaks above 46 feet. :wtf:

Eric I just did Camel's Hump as a day hike this morning (7-6-09) I did it from the west side parking area at the end of Camel's Hump road which runs east from the village of Huntington Center.

Do youself a favor and take the time to do these at a non rushed pace. If the other's are anything like this hike, you will want to savor every step of the hike. I did this as a loop hike using the Forest City Trail, Long Trail (North) and descedned by the Burrows Trail. With a short .3 mile side trip down the Dean Trail to a fantastic view of the Camel's Hump looming high above a small Beaver Pond. This route has some beatiful cliffy sections heading north on the Long Path and real impressive views of what your walking into.
