:( Terrible news. I never stayed there (it's a little out my tax-bracket), but still it's piece of history.
So as not to confuse, we might add that the -Lake Placid Lodge- (http://www.lakeplacidlodge.com/z-home.htm) is not the same as the Adirondack LOJ, the rustic gateway to the High Peaks that we all know and love.

Do you mean the Barnum and Bailey Adirondac Loj?

This is very sad but I do feel "relieved," as I was upset, as a recent phone call, mis-informed me that it was the ADK Loj!

This past summer, I saw a great episode of Roadside Adventures on Mountain Lake PBS that featured the Lake Placid Lodge. The remodeling that the Garrett Group did to the Lodge when they bought it was extremely impressive. Would have been a neat place to take a tour of one day...Will be interesting to see what they do to rebuild. Sad though, to think of how many folks the place employs that will now be out of work...

That already happened back in the early 20th century.
