This past week I did some hiking in the Paria Plateau region of northern AZ/southern UT. Here are some photos of an area called The Wave (user name WalksWithBlackflies).

:drop: Absolutely incredible! Did you take those pics with the same camera you had on Orebed Brook? Simply awesome! Can you hike wherever you want or is it strictly controlled due to potential erosion?

Yes, I used the same camera as Orebed... with tripod. You can hike wherever you want... just tread lightly since you'll be photographing the area you'll be walking on. Stepping on the "air fins" is not a good idea as they easily crumble. The whole area is nothing but loosely-bound sandstone, so the next strong wind or rain will change the landscape. However, the BLM limits access to 20 people per day. There were only two others the day I was there.

Hey Rico-
Your pics are amazing!
A quickie on those sunglasses. I saw you hiking with Neil in late October. I thought for sure Bono had taken up backpacking and just shaved his head to hide his identity! :p

Yes, I do remember Neil talking to you. Sorry I wasn't much of a conversationalist, but I was still suffering from post-traumatic stress due the all the blowdown that day! Regarding my identity... shhhhhhhhh.

Geologically, the area of southern UT/northern AZ is one of the most interesting areas I've hiked in. The weather is predictable (sunny every day). You look at where you want to go, and go there. Scale is a problem. Things are further away than one would think. In less protected areas, one can see ATV tracks from 10 miles away. Very different than the eastern forests.
Rico: You got a good eye for composition.

Sure is. I played a little game with myself on the drive from Phoenix to Page. Pick a landmark, guess it's distance, and then see how close my guess was. I started off guessing nearly 3x too short!
You must have had a fun ride into work this morning

You must have had a fun ride into work this morning  Hey. with a foot of snow, it's better on a bicycle than in a car. I feel sorry for those stuck in traffic in cars. I just have cold and wet to deal wtih. No traffic. And it's nice and soft if I fall... Unless there is a fire hydrant under the snow bank.

That's the hard part about "bushwhacking" in the west. It is so big and our eastern point of reference is skewed to limited viewing range. We tend to think things are closer than they are.

Two days after taking these photos, I saw a roadrunner cross the road. 30 seconds later a coyote crossed the road in the same spot. I immediately began searching for the Acme box!
