Well Neil I'm glad you put 0 on that first option cus that's where I'm at.

It's strange really as I love winter and have done my fair share of igloo and Quinzee building. Most of my winter is spent up on the Laurentian shield where the cross-country skiing is excellent.
Hope to get at least a couple of winter 46ers in this coming season.... maybe work at the ones I dont have in the summer yet to save doing them again.

Cheers :drink:

How far away is that and where is a good starting point?
Thanks

The Laurentian hills are less than an hour North of Montreal and many good trails can be found criss-crossing the region. One of my favourite centres is Morin Heights which is about 50 miles away. It is billed as the Cross Country Capital of Eastern Canada.
There are many other centres too.... Mont Tremblant park has great trails and generally good snow conditions being further North.
Well, I want to get down the Dacks to do some winter hiking so I'll stop there or I'll talk myself out of it. ;)

Thanks Prino, good to know.
One more question? Would being a very non-Francais kinda guy make traveling, lodging, etc difficult up there?

Thanks much.

Neil has it right. Also, Morin Heights area is 50% English speaking and nearly everyone is Bi-lingual.

The Adirondacks are part of the Laurentian chain (geologically speaking).

The famous canadian rock band RUSH did many albums there. Neil Pert use to take his drum kit on the lake to have a particuliar practice ...

Any wolves or cougars in the Laurentian Mts?

Seriously, I would love to hear and see wolves in the wild someday.

Seriously, I would love to hear and see wolves in the wild someday. You want wolves, go to Algonquin Park in Ontario. You'll be hard pressed NOT to hear the packs at night. Algonquin tends to be more of a canoe area.

Funny you should mention it..... I would LOVE to do a kayak camping trip to Algonquin! It's been in the back of my mind for years....

Anyone interested?

Algonquin is just a 3 hour drive from me. I usually get up there once a year. Never done the kayak thing there, it's always been a canoe since I like to bring my dog, and I'm not really sure how to portage a kayak 2km.

Speaking of the Laurentians, yesterday Prino and I hiked up to the top of Montagne Noir (elev. 2910 feet) just south of St. Donat. What a great little hike! 14 kms. and 1400 feet of height gain. There is a plane wreck from WWII (that we didn't have time to explore) near the top. When we left the car it was -22C. A Grey Jay attcked us and even attempted to suck my brain out of the top of my head!

Poor starving bird.

The bird wasn't starving. He was cold. He was going after hot air.

I couldn't get anywhere with those links so by doing a member search on Webshots for Prinoski I found this:

You can actually see a small piece of brain tissue stuck to my hair. When he stuck his beak in and started digging around I had intense hallucinations and remembered scenes from my childhood with vivid clarity. Like the time my parents made me go outside with no shirt on in the winter at -22C.

It seems that it was a beautiful excursion, but what do you do half naked in the wood? :drop:

Nice pics. Especially the animals. I just don't seem to get that lucky on my hikes to see such interesting wildlife.

In my personal opinion, the GREATEST export to come out of Canada! Some might argue the two most famous beers brewed by our friends from the north.

Yes Neil, Rush is bigger than even you, sorry pal........

Ah Joni, she would be in my top 3. She reminds me so much of Bob Dylan with her lyrics. Let us also throw into the fray The Band, I'm pretty sure most of them are Canadian. I justed watched "The Last Waltz" on IFC, and its almost eerie to realize that at least a couple of those guys have passed away. Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, and I understand that Levon Helm is gravely ill. Boy I feel old. I'm sorry Prino, I'm really not trying to steal this thread!

Severe threadjack indeed!
More like meandering thread syndrome about two related themes, Canadian music and Canadian "mountains",

Going back to the main topic: nude winter hiking.

The reason we shed our duds on the mtn. top is related to a taboo subject on most forums. Religion. We were engaging in an ancient celtic rite. Our aim was to allow the deity that governs over the mountains to see deeply into our souls. The ancient celts believed that clothing cloaked their souls from the gods and that they could entertain sinfull thoughts with impunity while clothed. From an ancient tongue "cloth" stems from "gloughted" which means god-hidden. One can see the root of the word god.

I believe Mavs00 encountered a fellow worshipper on the summit of Algonquin last year.

I also believe that in removing our sweat soaked base layer shirts and putting on dry ones we were increasing our comfort level but that's just a minor detail, eh?

Neil

Far more disturbing than the actual ritual is that someone found the need to photograph the ritual. What's with you and naked pictures Neil?
They're for e-mailing to the deities , of course.

Furthermore, It's like the old saying "If a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody around... does it make a sound?"

Likewise..."If a (semi)nude appears on the mountain top and no one takes a picture did it really happen?"

All I can say is it must be cold out because "The turkey is obviously done!"

Shayne, I'll answer your e-mail to me here. There is lots of hiking, cross country skiing and bushwhacking to be had in the Laurentians. Prino really knows the area and hopefully he,ll chime in. I go out every March for 5 or 6 days to an area NW of Mtl. (2½ hr. drive) and we bushwhack to our hearts content. You can see the pics here (http://neil.webcentre.ca/outdoor%20pursuits/cabin2005/index.html) But nothing up there comes close to the Dacks for shear size, challenge and open views.

I have a chance to be at Mont Tremblant Village in late December, but I am not a skier. I see you can snowshoe and summit M-T. Any ideas of online sources of other snowshoe trails or climbs in that vicinity? Thanks.
