I was wondering how many forum members were pursuing the winter 46.

I'll never get there, but I do have a paltry and unimpressive 8.

Gothics
Giant
Esther
Whiteface (about 25x-30x)
Phelps
Tabletop
Porter
Cascade

Last year I made it to 12. 11 last season alone. I love Winter hiking. I have to admit, after just finishing my 46 I'm not as stoked about the 46W. I've been going ga-ga over the HH maps all week and am eager to get back out there.

However, I have a couple of hiking buddies who helped me get to 46 who want to finish as well so this will be a perfect opportunity for all of us.... :)

Plus there are definitely a few peaks I want to revist. Espeically Street & Nye so I can actually look up and see the markers this time....

-Shayne

P.S. Shoot it looks like I voted wrong, I read it I have more than 31 to go.

I've only got two so far! (Gray, Cliff). What's "paltry and umpressive" about 8??? What's the big deal about eight? What's the big deal about 46 W? There's so much else to climb!

Think of all those guys and gals in health clubs and indoor tracks doing their routines, going round and round or staring blankly into the television screen. Now, compare that to a winter round of the 46 and all that it involves.

Now, compare that to a winter round of the 46 and all that it involves. After enough rounds of each, I'd guess these were similar! (:=)). I'm sure I'll get into trouble for saying that, and I don't REALLY mean it. I've spent time in those clubs, and the exercise is good, but the "lifestyle" (which it is for so many) is stultifying. But I have no intention of doing either one. I'll climb more of the 46 in winter because I enjoy certain mountains or I enjoy the company of those who are climbing with me. I won't do them over and over again, because I'm not "driven" that way. But bravo for those who do.

Yea but Dick, your two peaks are tougher than my 8 were. Gothics was the only challenge on my list. The others were easy and the problem is; I have mostly run out of 'easy'.

I just don't like the cold enuff to stay out in it long enough to climb the Dixes, Santanoni's, etc.

25 down and 21 to go. Not bad for a punk from Chicago. If everything goes according to plan, and with a little help from my Winter 46er friends in Lake Placid, I should finish by the end of the '06-'07 winter season.

You'd actually be surprised how warm, you stay hiking in Winter. I was always afraid of "freezing to death," myself. It's really not that bad, once you get used to it and outfitted properly.

Completing the winter 48 was hard work enough. With almost every peak being like a Bonds expedition plus the 4-5 hour pilgrimage, I am in no hurry to officially pursue the winter 46.

In spite of a small sample size the pattern is quite clear. For the 46er-W people we would have a graph with 2 seperate peaks. Those who have already finished, those who are near the beginning and almost nobody in between. (I could just as easily be in the 0-10 group having done 11). Then there would be a 3rd peak of winter hikers who don't have designs on the 46.

I love winter hiking and just all around being outside that time of year. My problem is that it coincides with my busiest time of year. I coach collegiate level swimming from Oct-Mar, so my work week during that period goes from about 40 to 55-60, with usually only 1 day off per week. Inevitably, that means my time in the mountains is limited during that period.

I have committed to getting up there more often in the coming years. For instance I have at least 3 trips in the next month or 2. Dec 17-18 (a non-winter one), Dec 24-25 (yup, we are planning a Christmas Eve Cascade/Porter sunset hike :) ) and Jan 20-21 (our gathering w/e). So I'll be able to at least add to my paltry total of 2 Winter High Peaks (although I have 5 HH).

Provided, I don't kick the bucket in the next few years, I fully expect that in time, I will certainly finish the 46W. Not because I particularly feel the rocker adds anything, but mostly because I love to be outside in winter and I expect we'll someday retire to the area.

All that said, I'm very active hiking locally during winter. We have some really good areas for STEEP (albeit short) winter bushwhacking/X-contry or other backcountry opportunities here in western NY. I generally spend 5-7 hours a week just kicking around doing local stuff during the winter months. It's not the same of course, but seeing that I have a tough time breaking away to get north, its the best I can do for now.

I’ve climbed Cascade, Porter, Dial, Nippletop, Big Slide, Sawteeth, and Giant in winter. I may climb all 46 in winter, but right now it isn’t a set goal of mine. I just enjoy getting out there during the winter months.

I took 11 years to complete my winter 46. I was enjoying hikes rather than REALLY trying to finish. There were a few peaks for which I made several attempts before getting them. In particular, I didn't get marshall until my fifth attempt. I would never check out conditions before hand, so I was frequently breaking trail solo. Like I said, I wasn't really trying to finish them, just have nice hikes.

I might be working on the NH 48 in winter. Up until this past weekend, I had 2 non-winter, and 17 winter. Trailwork in the summer means that I have very little hiking time then.

Unfortunately, I climbed 4 this weekend, so now my percentage of winter peaks is lower. But I'm in no rush. If it comes to a choice, I'd probably take a nice 'useless' climb with a friend, rather than rush to get something on a list.

My first winter peak was Marcy in January 1980. Almost 26 years later, I'm not even half-way through. So, now, I am REALLY trying to finish ... before old age sets in. ;)

I only have two calender winter 46r's done but I've enjoyed winter hiking a lot so far so I'd like to think maybe I'll try the W46. My biggest problem so far has been having all the right gear for winter for myself and/or any of my kids (i.e. I don't have crampons) so I'm trying to decide which ones would be acceptable to try without crampons and concentrate on those first...I've done Phelps and Big Slide so far....

having all the right gear for winter for myself and/or any of my kids (i.e. I don't have crampons)... I didn't have crampons doing the 46W. You don't need them if you're willing to turn back.

Although I find it hard to beleive, Wayne R once told me that he never used crampons on his 46x46, which included at least 46/4 winter rounds.

I don't know about you Hikerdad, but seeing as gas costs me about $50/round trip I'd pick up a pair of Grivel G10's for about $100. I realize hiking with kids makes every purchase exponential... and they grow out of stuff so fast!

Am I reading this right? Out of 46 rounds of the Forty Six, Wayne only did four of those rounds in Winter? Wow, I thought he must had beat Richard Krenko's Winter Record of Five!

Tom,

If you save Colden for your last one, let me know and maybe I'll join you. Or maybe Santanoni if the weather is about 25 degrees (above zero), sunny, no wind, like there are many days like that in the Adks!

I changed the tally #'s but can't figure out how to move the voters' names around. Spaddock voted incorrectly and I fixed his tally but not his name. So, TomMcG and Spaddock's names should be swapped.

You calling me old? I know, my wife put you up to that, right?

There are two kinds of finishers. Those that set a goal, and work like mad for that goal. This is where you are more likely to find the younger ones.

The other types, are those who just like to walk and hike. Eventually, they will finish, whether they are trying or not. These tend to be older.

Consider the 'drunken man's walk' algorithm. You are on a giant chessboard, and want to visit each square. It can be done quite efficiently. However, put a drunken man on the board, with equal probability of heading in any direction (he's not allowed to fall off the edge), IT CAN BE SHOWN (use that line much BC?) that, given enough time, he will visit all squares.

Corollary: Given enough time and beer, anyone can finish the 46.

For me the goal is climbing the list and not finishing the list.

Of all the conversations and threads I've read, or posted myself, that sums it up better than anything I've seen.
Nicely worded.

Well for those complaining about having only done 2 winter peaks, I envy you! I've done a bunch in the summer, but not the winter. I have caught the winter bug and am taking on the ambition of the winter 46. I have done some winter hiking and loved it.

My problem is it has always been difficult to either get to the peaks or find people who are crazy enough to go. ( I know, whine, whine, whine) I am new to this site and am very excited about the possiblities. Thank you to everyone who has posted for the inspiration, especially skyclimber. I went to find the book, "Women with Altitude" at Barnes and Noble and they are back ordered! What a disapoint. I wanted to start planning all my adventures while reading this book.

I'm looking forward to tackling the Winter 46! :p
