View Full Version : Plans for the October 25th KVSAR Fundraising Weekend

The date is getting closer, and it looks like we're not sure who is coming, or what you will be doing, so in order to provide a target and focus for the weekend, I thought we'd provide some suggestions.

As Neil mentioned before, the real goal of the weekend is to get together, have fun, and help raise money for the Keene Valley SAR team. Given the recent economic situation, we realize that times are tough, but our grassroots approach is critical now to maintain services we hope we never need, but expect will be there if and when we do. As an example, in recent months the state of Colorado has cut the budget for their Avalanche Forecast Center, which would have cut their afternoon forecast - since then much of the funding has been made up by members of Colorado hiking and skiing forums - we can do the same here!

Since the plan this time is not to climb all 46 peaks like we've done in the past, we're suggesting you get out on Saturday and enjoy the Adirondacks any way you prefer. And instead of suggesting donations of $46 per peak, we're going to try something different...

This time, we're going to offer options - hike, kayak, fish, bike...whatever you want to do. When you're done, add up the miles hiked, hours played, fish caught, or kilo-feet of elevation gained...and as a suggested donation to the KVSAR, we suggest $4.60 per unit of activity, however you want to measure it. For example, hiking to Cascade & Porter could be five hours, six miles, or 2000 feet of gain. Pick one or more - and make your donation that way. We'd like to shoot for at least 500 miles hiked that weekend, or 200 hours of activity...it'd be a nice start to help the rescue team.

Remember also that there will be a potluck at RandomScooter's on Saturday evening - and he has graciously offered his property to those who want to camp there at no charge! (Thanks again Tom! ) Think of everything we get at "no charge" in the Adirondacks - the trails, the ponds, and for this weekend only, free camping at Tom's. Now it's time to help give a little back...and remember, the top three bidders get to stay in Scoots' cabin!

Reply here with your plans for the weekend, and I will keep the tally of the pledges - let's kick off the fundraising with a successful weekend, and our success will not only be measured by how much we raise, but in how much enjoyment we have in doing it.

Thanks for your help and see you there!

Scott

I'm planning to do Whiteface/Esther on Friday, and then Dial/Nippletop or Street/Nye on Saturday - rough estimate is 20 miles, so I pledge $4.60 * 20 = $92...

I have already determined what my donation will be.

I plan on kicking $250 in to the cause (that comes to about what I'd pay for a decent shell, pair of snowshoes or gas for 5 trips to the Adirondacks).

So what I'll do is divide 250 by 46 (don't ask me where I got that figure, I just made it up :) ) and that gives me 5.4347826 peaks to climb on the weekend. Maybe I'll round it down to an even 5.0.

I know everyone's pretty freaked about the sub-prime mortgage crisis, it's all you hear about on the radio here in Canada and how the economy is headed south. Grass roots efforts to fund certain activities and specific needs will probably increase in importance.

Sylvie and I went for a little stroll in a provincial park 25 miles outside of Montreal. Parking was $7 and our user fees were $4 each. Last Thursday Tom and I went for a 9 hour hike in the Adirondacks. Parking: $0, user fees:$0.

I'm doing smaller hikes, doing a round of the 46 with someone. Probably doing Big slide over the brothers saturday, then a toss up for sunday. Will definitely be dropping in to casa scooter on saturday night though.

Doug,
What time you starting? I'm considering this myself, or Street & Nye, or Moose & McKenzie. Probably won't make a final decision until Friday night after our long drive up, but I'll look for ya if I end up hiking Big Slide.

I'll be arriving Friday afternoon and can either tent outside or sleep on the floor. Saturday I'm planning on catching another firetower, Hurricane. It'll be fun looking down to spot Scooter's. Sunday I'll be available for cleanup as long as necessary as I don't have to head home. If anybody's still around, and interested, and the weather's good, join me on tiny Belfry on my way to VT.

It can be done, but you might want to have binoculars! Remember, from my place the tower looks small. From the tower my place is nearly invisible.

My plans are totally in the air. My hiking partner is bailing on this wekend--so I might try to tag along with Alistair if he doesn't care, or I might solo(unless someone is interested) Avalanche or Jay-saddleback. If someone is really into it, I would like to do something in the sentinel range on sunday...

If all goes well and I can make it this weekend, I would love to join you to hike Jay Doug. I probably won't know what my plans are till Friday though.
