There I was @ 4am on Sunday morning, waking up to roll over to let my other arm fall asleep. In the back of my head I realized that it wasn't raining anymore. Which was remarkable, because I spend every weekend camping with work, and it's been raining for three weeks now. So I decided that I'd get up to answer nature's call... and found three inches of snow on top of my tent and everything else and it was still dumping! We got about four inches total (above Roaring Brook Falls) of wet snow on top of a thin layer of ice. Trees were crashing down and bending over because they still had leaves, so trails are a little messy now. The caretaker @ the AMR said that the peaks got 8-10 inches. We aborted our planned hike and went to Rainbow Falls instead, there were some good sized trees down along the Lakes Road. Now that I'm home and warm and dry, the local forecasts are calling for another 6-12'' in the mountains overnight tuesday, mixing with rain. Sounds like winter's kicking in. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just putting the info out there for all of you who might be trying to squeeze another hike in with fall gear, it's time to pack heavier. Talk about beautiful though, it looked like midwinter with the snow on the hemlocks and the branches all weighed down. I gotta start taking my camera!

Spence and Brian had to cancel their big day because of hazardous driving conditions. Even down here in the Berkshires, they're forecasting 6" for tonight.

...although mine is going to be a bit busy. It's 3:30am and I'm awake because of the crashing sounds in the woods around my home...victims of the heavy snow bowing under the weight and snapping. In particular the one that "twanged" my power line on the way down is concerning me  . Let the dog out and while I stood on the porch listened to more trees falling. Doubt the 1/2 mile of driveway will be passable in the morning. So far we're looking at 8" of very heavy snow at the 1000' elevation and it's still coming down.

Hey, where's the "worried to death" smilie?

I'm submitting this before the power goes out.

WOW, hope all goes well and power doesn't go out and that damage is less than you think. That's the thig with these early season storms with the leaves still on the trees, just a little will snow can pull down branches.

Just a rain even here in the west. But rain it has, I'm gathering the animals 2x2 and plan to start building a boat soon.

Whew, I'm back. The line got burned through by a hanging tree, but NYSEG had it fixed by evening. Kudos to those guys for handling these large-scale outages. Overtime or not, it's a tough job. No damage at our place. A couple large branches came within 10' of my wife's car, but no hits.

We ended up with 12" on cold surfaces (such as my garage roof) and 8" on the ground. A few hundred feet higher up our road add 4" to those numbers. It's melting fast down here though.
