View Full Version : 2 kinds of ADK wilderness?
Should the Sentinel Wilderness Area be classified and treated differently than the High Peaks Wilderness Area? I know they both have their own UMP's (which I havn't read in any depth) but they both come under the same designation as outlined in the SLMP.
Or, are they treated the same but was the HPWA already the way it is now when the UMP's were written?

Before its UMP, the High peaks were had the same rules as everywhere else.
The master plan gives the guidelines, but specific rules can vary from unit to unit. The DEC seems to be reactive rather than being proactive. For example, no campfires in the Eastern High peaks, because the woods have been picked clean. There isn't a problem in the other areas (yet), so there is no ban. (If they would be proactive, they would ban fires everywhere.
I think the idea of having different rules... only slightly different... for each area is a bit of a public relations thing.... "See, we're not trying to ban something you like to do... only where it is a problem.
I kinda thought that by allowing fires elsewhere and maintaining the ban in the highpeaks, the DEC thought maybe folks would go where they could have fires, thereby reducing stress in the HP.

What does NYSDEC say about the HPW. DO they consider the SR to be part of the HPW. Maybe we find out from the APA, ADK, or the ATIS. No they wouldn't know any more than NYSP, EMS or even the PWLITA. But we could ask the LPATP, what they think of the LHPWL's. Just my thoughts.
