Sylvie and I were out hiking north of Montreal in the Forêt Ouareau, about a 1¼ hour drive from our home. We were bushwhacking along a brook when we saw some large canine prints in the lingering snow. Lots and lots of prints. Then we saw the fresh-looking remains of a deer scattered about. Here are the pictures (http://adkhighpeaks.com/neil/outdoor%20pursuits/ouareau_05-08/index.html).

(For some reason the 3rd picture didn't load, although its thumbnail did. You'll have to go back to the thumbnail page and click on the 4th. Then, the next button will work right to the end.)

And you dragged out the remains on a sled for further examination?

First I boiled them for one hour, then I applied my own special sauce and put them on the barbque.

A man does whatever he has to to put food on the table.

The plastic bags on the sled were large bags of soil. Now, why would someone go to all the trouble of hauling soil into the woods? Hmmmmm....

1) you are paying for your past crimes and replacing the soil that you have erroded over the years
2) you are planting an illegal crop of majic mushrooms to eat with your deer stew when you do your vision quest
3) You are short on cash from purchasing too much gear and are planting a cash crop of marijuana.
There was a guy a few years ago that went for option 3 but was lost for a few days ( sampling his cash crop ) and his girl friend called DEC to report him lost and he was caught and given a larger fine than one for not wearing snowshoes.:D
What are your plans ?

Bear Grylls would have just nibbled on the bones right there in the field.

About a year ago I came across a fresh dear carcass near a part of the Shawangunks called Spring Farm. There was a pool of blood in the bottom of the rib cage that wasn't even congealed yet.

I think coming home from mother's day, I saw a recent small animal kill on the NJ Turnpike by I-195. Cop on the shoulder, traffic going about 20mph. Not much left of whatever was hit because there was fur and pieces of flesh everywhere... But it must of been recent. Might not have been a deer though, at least what was left of it was the size of a small dog. I thought it was an accident when i saw the cop's flashers but it looked only to be from roadkill.

I saw a deer this morning on my way to work, small fawn, no mother to be seen, right in the middle of a backroad.

I sent the pictures link to the Quebec version of the DEC enquiring about wolves and received this reply yesterday:

Bonjour,

Il semble bien que la piste apparaissant sur la photo en soit une de loup. Le loup est présent à Notre-Dame-de-la-Mercie et même un peu plus au sud à Chertsey.

Merci

Direction de l'aménagement de la faune de Lanaudière

He says it looks like a wolf print and that wolves range even further south than where I took the pictures. There are wolves only 70 kms. north of Montreal. Interesting.

Were they loups or louves?

And were they in drag?

Were they loups or louves? Les deux.

And were they in drag? Not always easy to tell.

I keep thinking of that song by Warren Zevon... What what its name? "Werewolves of Montréal" I think.

You found the sled... and used it to haul out other litter? Bags of soil?

The sled was lying beside a closed trail I often use and I got sick of seeing it so hauled it out. Then we found the discarded soil bags and tossed them on.

The worst litter though is flagging. People put 18 inch strips of it every 50 feet and leave it.
