View Full Version : Catskill Conditions
Jim and I are gping to be hiking this weekend. Yeah, I know the forecast isn't the greatest. What are the conditions on the peaks right now? I am thinking that snowshoes and crampons won't be necessary. Perhaps bareboots and/or stabilicers?

I'd bring the goods because of this storm that is hitting us tonight into tomorrow. It's supposedly a mixture of snow/rain down by NYC but it might be snow in the cats...

I should be hiking tomorrow, either Cole and Black Dome or Friday and BC, all depending on what the conditions look like in the am. If it looks passable early, I'm heading towards Moonhaw, otherwise I'll stick to a trail. Regardless, I plan to bring the whole kit - stabalicers, crampons and snowshoes. The report I heard on my way into work (from Catskill to Hudson), was snow starting around midnight, turning to rain showers mid-day and back to snow showers as the temps drop in the late afternoon, with 1 - 5" accumulations. I'll be sure to report conditions tomorrow night.

I was on Eagle and Big Indian yesterday. There was approx. 3 inches of fresh powder. Although I carried snowshoes the whole way they were not necessary. I did post-hole a few times on top of Big Indian where some residual snow remained below the fresh stuff. Some sort of traction device is suggested. There was a lot of ice below the fresh powder. We bare booted into the lean-to on Seager-Big Indian trail. I wore Micro-Spikes from there on out. My other buddies wore Stabilicers and instep crampons. There was enough snow up high to accommodate the crampons.
This could all change after tomorrow.

Yesterday on the W Stoppels ,it was bare boot(touch and go), today we wore snow shoes comfortabily from the PA to the top of Woodpecker Ridge (3460') and back.
There is a hard crust underneath 3 or 4" nice snow, which won't be affected by cold rain, except to get harder.
It has been lightly snowing since 3:00 PM.
Bring everything.
Thanks for all the info. I need to pass by Campmor on my drive up ( really I do, ask Jay, he can vouch for this....I lieve in South Jersey and pass right by the Paramus NJ exit on the Garden Dtate Parkway) I may stop and pick up stabilicers. I have crampons and snow shoes packed.

We got about an inch of wet mush total accumulation as of Friday morning in northern NJ. Roads are wet and slushy but OK.
It's actually warming up in lake placid for Sunday... Wunderground now says a high of 2deg! Global Warming strikes again. it was listed at -2deg for a high a few days ago...

2 inches of wet snow in Saugerties this morning. Raining at 6:00 am. Highs in the 40's today, then turning colder for the weekend. Expect ice.
