JayDefine up! :D

There is 1/2" of slush here near Kingston. There was already 3-6" on Saturday in the ADKs, FWIW. I know, this is the Catskills section....

Some good ice last night. It's mostly melted down here in the valleys, but the mountains are probably rivers of ice in places.

Up as in north of me (which would pretty much include all of upstate Ny.. :)

We got rain last night so we had 3" of snow before and 1/2"-1" of slush monday morning..

From watching the doppler maps last night and seeing the accumulation reports this morning, it appears that freezing rain and rain overspread the entire Catskill region during the night. It was light enough not to cause much ice damage.

The highest reported Catskill snow fall I saw from last night was 3" at Oneonta, and it had already consolidated down to a 1" depth by dawn. The western Cats seem to be absorbing all of the precipitation today, but we might get a dusting tonight - perhaps just enough to cover over the icy ledges for some slipping and a sliding.

It was a typical early season forecast and storm. High on hype, down on delivery.

Sounds like it may be truely stabilicer or crampon time in the catskills.... It sounds like it should stay cold enough this week for it to remain icy by saturday.

Thanks Mark!

Up is always north, south is always down , east and west are over here and that way.:)
Anyway, in the NW cats, we got 2" of snow yesterday, followed by .42" of cold rain last night which eliminated the snow . The temp is dropping with enough flurries to cover the ice. Things will be very slick ,the ground will be very hard. It is also very windy.

Up is always north, south is always down

Mudhook, I hope certain people don't see this wisdom. If they do, we will always have to pick a starting point due South of the summit if we ever expect to get TO THE TOP. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

FWIW, The Slide Mountain reporting station at Winnisook Lake reported 3" new snow by Tuesday morning, with a total depth of 4". Lake effect snow is still kicking in today in the western Cats. With low temperatures forecast at least through Saturday morning the ground should still be white at elevation this weekend.:) Traction devices advisable for the thin, hidden ice layer underneath.

Hey Jay........

Dunno where in tarnation they got a foot on Whiteface. I am 7 miles away and got one inch.
Methinks they're fulla buffalo chips. But,,,,,,,ya never know - maybe up high they got a good dump? I dunno.

They do make snow and they're all happy'like because they have new generation equip now that is a lot faster. So now they supposedly don't have to sit & wait for the temps to drop and then go as fast as they can, all the while hoping that the temps stay low. Their new equip is fast enuff that they can wait 'til it's good and cold and then make lots of snow in a short time.
Or so the theory goes..........

Adios Jay !!

Mudhook, I hope certain people don't see this wisdom. If they do, we will always have to pick a starting point due South of the summit if we ever expect to get TO THE TOP. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Fact one: water usually runs downhill so north is always up on the top, so the starting point for any summit is due south.:)
Fact two: Having worked at too many ski slopes I know they measure with a stick that starts between 8"-12", depending on the honesty of the owners or managers.
I returned home this afternoon to 4" new snow from the flurry activity today.

OK, I can see the mts this morning - they're not looking like they received a ft of snow this week. No way. Too much dark where it would be painted white. I say that the Whiteface folks were a little creative in their snow report.

We will be trying the autoroad tonite tho, should be plenty for that

There is a hill, ok its road grading, by the Rio Grande exit of the Garden State Parkway. Leads into a drainage ditch but I've seen poeple sledding there in the past.

Okay Jay, now we've got something to report "up here." It's snowing like crazy here in the Wallkill Valley and there's probably 4-6 inches or so on the ground already. The Catskills should be getting a good foot or so before this is over. I'm definitely heading up there this weekend, or maybe something even more local. Gotta take advantage of snow close to home while it's here. We might actually have a normal winter this year, but I'm not going to get my hopes up too high yet.

It started at 10:00 Am, stopped about 7:00 pm. I have, at 1800', 7-8" maybe, of a nice snowshoe consistency snow. There is most likely some crunchy stuff left at higher el. from the ice/rain storms earlier in the week.

We ended up with about 9" here in Saugerties. News reports show a little more in southern Ulster County and less to the north. If the weatherman is correct we're expecting another 6"-12" Saturday night and Sunday.

There's more of it now!

The Weather Channel said 1-2" followed by sleet and rain in my area. I just removed about 6" of wet heavy snow from the driveway. I'm sure what came down as sleet here was all snow in the higher elevations.

12-14" of the white stuff, I'm sure more in the HP.
That would be in the Adirondacks, where it was much colder and actually snowed. Down here, below Albany it was mainly a rain and ice event, with emphasis on the rain part. Definitely bringing crampons and stablicers (don't have microspikes). Not sure whether I'll carry the snowshoes - depends if I plan to go off trail (thinking of Hunter and Leavitt Pk (SW Hunter) tomorrow).

I was walking in the vicinity of Bearpen and Vly (S. Bearpen) today and found very patchy areas of very heavy snow (3 to 8 inches) interspersed with barren dry no snow patches. For an 8.5 mile walk I used my snowshoes about 70 percent of the time.

Only 5" in Kingston. Very light and fluffy, and easy to shovel for a change. It was great XC skiing this evening, but the snow will likely soften up this weekend.

The highest Catskill accumulations that I have seen so far were 9" at West Shokan and 8" in Halcott Center. At elevation there may well be a foot. No doubt with some drifting, and lighter amounts on the wind swept, icy ledges. It should be snowshoe conditions this weekend, but traction devices will be very useful for the hidden ice underneath the fluffy snow. Have fun.

I found this to be a very accurate reporting on the conditions that I witnessed first hand on Saturday 2/23/08 at elevations up to 3200-3300 feet.

The latest from the Wallkill Valley Weather Center (me:) ):

The snow took awhile to even start sticking, but once it did we got maybe 2 inches in a couple of hours. I left work about 4:45 and there were huge flakes falling fast, but within 10 minutes it had turned into tiny ice crystals. As I got to Main St, there was a crash of flash of lightning and crash of thunder, and within another couple minutes it was rain, drenching my shell for the remainder of my walk home. The Mid-Hudson Valley is currently right on the transition line, which is often the case. I imagine the Catskills got at least 3-4 inches by now, with plenty more to come overnight.

It was hovering around 34 degrees in the valley when it changed over to rain. In Saugerties the few inches of accumulation never melted, just got very soggy. I'm sure there was no rain in the higher elevations. Anywhere that did get rain will be icy by tomorrow.

Mark Schaefer

Last night about 7 pm I shoveled about 3" of very wet snow just north of Kingston as the storm was winding down. A little frozen precipitation was coming down at the time.

According to the Doppler maps the rain never made it past the eastern escarpment of the Catskills. The Slide Mt weather reporting station at Winnisook Lake reported 10" of snow. 7-9" was the common total reported across the interior of the Catskills. Windham and Maplecrest were the lowest at 4-5". There should be more accumulation at elevation. Temperatures were near freezing in the interior last night as the snow fell. So the snow is probably very wet and still plastered to the trees. With two very cold nights (Wed/Thur) predicted the snow may form a crust with much of the plaster remaining on the trees.

A slight down side is that the temperatures are forecast to warm up into the low to mid 30s for the weekend with wind on Saturday. Hopefully the plaster will stay in place, but it may be falling onto hikers -- at least it will not be falling ice. Should be fun.

Still more tonight. 3-5 inches predicted for New Paltz, which if true probably means at least 6-8 in the Catskills. Nice that the snow is supposed to be coming overnight this time. Go to bed and wake up to another great winter morning. I'll probably ski in the Gunks again Saturday and then hike in the Catskills Sunday. The base should have been frozen rock hard everywhere the last two days.

Why clean the trees off. I always try to hike right after the snow and check the wind conditions to have the snow on the trees. Makes everything sooooooo much more beautiful and the snow bombs are fun to dodge. We are doing Cornell from the Slide PA on Sunday. Hopefully some snow will be still on the trees with 37mph gusts on Saturday night.
