I had a little bit of time so I headed up to Schroon Lake to Climb Severence Mt. Granted it is not much of a hike but a few miles and 700 feet of climbing is better than hanging around doing nothing.

The DEC trail sign says 813 feet of ascent but as usual they got it wrong. The ADK club guide says 1638 feet elevation and 713 feet of ascent. On the summit my altimeter read 1640 and a 720 foot gain. What else is new the sign is wrong.

It is a nice trail well maintained and in good condition. The views make this small Mt well worth the modest effort for a morning hike. Here are a few pics from the new digi cam. Again, not crazy about easyshare but its free and not taking a lot of skill to use.

That's a great little hike. I took my mother up there when she was 76. Gotta keep her in shape you know! Took her up Koon that year also.

I have always thought about climbing this hill while planning trips to the high peaks. But, always ending up driving past it being too tired or too late in the day to hike up it.
Hackensack mountain (overlooking village of Warrensburg) is another nice small peak along the Northway corridor.

It's one of those nice little hikes you can do in a half day. With a week of doing "chores" I had to escape if only for a little while. Tomorrow it is back to my handy man role finishing a porch roof. I'd like to run off and do the Wonderland Trail but not this year.

Oh well there are a few adventures awaiting over the next couple of weeks.

Wonderland, as in Mt Desert Island Wonderland????

If yes, then I'll say you do need to run off. I can't live a summer without it and the other miles and miles up there. And don't forget Ship Harbor trail.

Wonderland Trail, the one that circles Mt Rainier. It is about one hundred miles around. I've done bits and pieces of it but never found the time to do it all.

Though yours sounds good too, and then I just found out about the Chic-Choc Mountains over on VFTT. Those things look incredible. I am surprised Neil hasn't spoken about them, could it be he is holding back on some of the good stuff? I mean we have all heard about the Canadian rockies but these? Hmmm.

It seems the drive up there is so long that Millanocket is just a short run.

AP- I haven't read the threads on Chic Choc. Ther's only so much time to read all the stuff that I tend to not open the NH threads at all. Guess I should take a look at that for mental reference. And Wonderland-oops your's is the BIG Grandaddy of Acadia's. Although I like my Wonderland because you just go out and set your mind on autopilot next to the ocean.

Walking along the ocean sounds nice. I have never been to Arcadia it is on my to do list one of these days. There is also a trail in Washington's Olympics that goes along the ocean. Since they get no snow the guide book writers claim it makes for an excellent winter hikes. It is in an area where they have all those huge rocks sticking out of the water I have only seen pictures. That is also on my to do list.

I've never been to the Chic-Chocs allthough Sylvie has. It's a looong drive from Mtl. In the summer there are a LOT of people doing the main peaks. Why would I go there when I've got Morgan the Organ Mountain a mere 2 and a half hours away?

I thought Katahdin was a long way off. According to online maps it is 731 miles from here.
