View Full Version : Weston Mtn. question
My son Weston wants to hike what he has called "HIS" mountain this summer. I've never done an off trail hike, although this one seems fairly straight forward. I do not have a GPS, I do have a compass and decent orienteering skills.
Is there a herd path at all? Bushwack? Is this doable for a 10 year old?
Thanks,
Dory

Yes, to all of that, with minimal bushwhacking.
I would suggest starting the hike along Nundagao Ridge in a clock-wise direction.
Nice hike, not overly difficult at all and not easy to get lost - a nice herd path and a beauty of a walk.

The Nundago ridge is fantastic, but, you don't need to do the entire ridge to climb Weston. You can just follow the marked trail to the pond then continue on a pretty well established path to Weston Mt. Very easy. No need for anything more sophisticated than a pair of eyes. like these

Two years ago when one of my daughters was seven we made a real adventure of it by camping at the Gulf Brook Leanto enroute to Weston (and Hurricane). The area around Lost Pond (at the foot of Weston) was real nice, too, and we could have camped there as well. There is also a leanto at the pond.

Great hike for all ages. From parking area left goes up the crows and there is a split just before the first crow to go clockwise around the ridge.
from parking lot right goes 1 mile to gulf brk. lean to amnd an A+ campsite then lost pond and 2nd lean to with very clear path up Weston Mt that has a nice rock overlook of pond and the ridge. This is all great kid friendly hikeing.I was just there 1 month ago doing research for anticipated hikes with my grandson.

All good advice so far, as usual.
My choice would be to park at Crow Clearing, and approach Weston via the trail to Gulf Brook leanto, then on toLost Pond and Biesemeyer Memorial leanto. There is a path from Biesemeyer leanto that leads about a quarter mile to the Weston summit (also known as Rocky Spur Peak) – the route is quite obvious.
Returning to Crow Clearing via Lost Pond would make it about a 5-mile round trip. A 10-year old in good health should be able to do this one with relative ease.

Go left........... Traveling up the Crow and then around the Nun-da-go-a Ridge (Soda Range) is the only way to go, IMO. The open rocks along the ridge are a kids (little and big) dream
I particularly liked the open rocks coming off the Soda Range and down into the col between SR and Weston. I actually found a short clip my wife took to give you an idea of how open it is. It's about 20 seconds and I "tubed" it for you
Here it is. That's Weston right at the start. It's taken right from the Rocks above the Soda Range/Weston col. You can tell by the goofy looks on the "kids" faces how much fun we were have. One of my fav hikes out there. Your son will LOVE it
