Hi,
I'm committed to making my canine a 46er, but am a bit daunted by the prospect of doing Colvin, etc. but especially Dial and Nippletop, with her. It looks like to avoid starting from St. Huberts and entering their property with a pet, I'll have to do them all from Elk Lake. It also appears that to accomplish Dial and Nippletop would involve traversing Colvin and Blake first and would be a roughly 30-mile round-trip. And there are no lean-tos in that area that I could see on the map. Has anyone faced this dilemma and if so how did you get around it? Is there any way of getting a special dispensation to go start from St. Huberts??
Thanks--Dave
There's a reasonable bushwhack up Gravestone Brook from the Dix trail that takes you to the trail over Dial/Nippletop.

You'll need to go off trail or do a lot of backtracking. I don't believe you will ever get permission to cross the AMR with a dog. Good luck.
There is No Way you will ever get a special dispensation to get access for your dog, through AuSable Club Property. They are a private club with private lands. Not even the Members of the Club are allowed to bring their dogs there. Besides the AuSable Club is also considered a deer preserve, in which is why they are not allowed, as dogs chase deer.

As rdl mentioned, there is a reasonable bushwhack route up Gravestone Brook that is probably the best way to get a pooch up there, at least to Dial/N-top. If you do a search on Gravestone Brook (http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/search.php?searchid=101269) you'll find plenty of good info on it right here on this site
Even if you don't do much bushwhacking, and not comfortable off trail, you'll likely find people on here that are quite comfortable with it and may volunteer you guide you along.
Good luck.

In pursuing the same goal, I did a traverse from Elk Lake to Blake, Colvin, Nippletop, and Dial before descending Gravestone Brook from the col between Dial and Bear Den. This was an easy bushwhack, and the routefinding going down a brook valley is always much easier than having to periodically choose which branch to take when going up. Alternatively, there is camping in Elk Pass. As for Sawteeth, the only way is over Gothics and Pyramid and then return.
