Crampons needed for Sugarloaf and above 2700' on Plateau. Snowshoes from col down, barebooted to col. Below freezing this morning so conditions were good; hard ice, hard snow, but with softening snow its a mixed bag.
Lowlander, what a difference a week makes! Your snowshoe tracks on upper Plateau have swelled so much they look like you were wearing surfboards:D
Someone barebooted up, post holing badly, destroying your track. They didn't make it past 3600' on Sugarloaf. Looked very painful, oh well. From the looks, you earned that one.

I love these two. How much snow was still left? I'm chewing over whether or not to bring some snowshoes to Indian Head on Saturday.

I'm considering going up into the area this weekend as well.
It sounds like Snowshoes are still needed. Crampons as well.

oh yeah, I marked this one as most difficult on my tally sheet for the club. I can't believe that someone tried to bareboot that. You think the foot deep snowshoe post holes would have been a clue.

I think every trail will be different. South facing areas are mostly snow free, more traveled trails might be open. What was frozen and barebootable in the morning, required snowshoes on the way out. Be prepared for everything.
Theres still lots of snow up high.

I agree. I'm also wondering what the effects of the warm weather this week might have.
I don't believe it has been warm enough to rule out snowshoes and crampons this weekend.
They'll be in my pack for sure.
Who's hitting the cats this weekend?

Indian Head tomorrow with Coldfeet. I was just gonna bring cramps, but I might now haul my snowshoes along. My pack isn't that big so cramps go in the pack, snowshoes get carried if I'm not wearing them. Hence, I don't like to bring them if I have no use for them.
Good luck on Kaaterskill. I was supposed to be there tomorrow to finish my 39/39. That plan's out.
