Agreed. Kids can be pretty tough to shop for, particularly when they get out trekking a little more advanced and need better stuff. In the early stages, we'd just pick up less expensive item that would get by. Stuff you could get pretty much anywhere. Now at 13/16 and pretty seasoned, the pretty much need "quality" stuff, but not the highest end stuff as they tend not to take the best care of it and/or grow out of it so quick.
Campmor is a great option for the "discount" items that still are quality enough to be of use in the back-country.
If they are still real young/inexperienced you can still get by with decent stuff at most typical stores you'd shop for that kinda stuff.

MEC in canada has a whole section of outdoor gear for kids... From snowshoes to GoreTex (ouch!)
http://www.mec.ca
Click on 'kids' on the left, to find gear as well as articles about doing things with kids. They will ship (many things) to the US.

Saw an ad for this place in Adirondack Sports and Fitness. Haven't shopped with them before and just checked out their site. Pretty impressive! Looks like they sell pretty much EVERYTHING outdoor related for kids. Most of what I saw is top of the line stuff, so it's pricey. They're also located in Saratoga Springs and have a retail store there.

thanks everyone for advice & input...will check those sites..
I've been looking at this site pretty extensively for their backpacks. I've been carefully observing the specs on some of the "kid" backpacks, and they are many times heavy! These seemed a reasonable weight and hydration compatible.

I've been also checking out here for sleeping bags:

Campmor is also a great place, especially for clothes, sometimes they don't have a super selection of kids packs and bags tho, which is why I went looking elsewhere.
Good luck!
