I stayed in the Cats the night before, I wanted to start early. I hit the end of route 56 about 7am. As I got to the bus turn around I slowed down to take a look at the road. It got really thin where it had been plowed. the sides were about a foot taller, but the middle looked firm and like it had been ran over once with a plow. I could also see several sets of tire tracks so I figured it was okay. The second I got on it I knew something wasn't right. Off to the side I could see where someone had gotten stuck but it looked like they got out okay. So I continued on. About 300 feet down the road I slide off to the left. I mean my Jeep just went left and there was nothing I could due to stop it. The drivers side tire both slide off the hard pack, and I felt the thing drop. I jumped out to take a look and landed in mid thigh deep snow. I step in the middle of the road and its like a concrete block thats about a foot and a half higher. All of a sudden I realize that the road hadn't been plowed that snowmobiles had packed it down and the sides were a couple of feet deep. I manage to get my Jeep unstuck fairly easily and start to back out. The grade on the road and the light weight of the backend of my Jeep kept allowing the backend to slide to the right. The Back right tire keeps dropping off the edge. I would have to stop pull forward, get it back on the road and as soon as I would start backing up it would try to slide off again. Eventually the front right fell off the hard pack. If you ever have driven a wrangler you know that once that front end gets stuck, YOU'RE SCREWED. Luckily though I couldn't operate my winch since I left the remote control that required to operate it in my garage on Long Island. My cell wasn't getting a signal so I started to walk.

I walked about a half mile or so before I found someone home, but the guy pretty much just refused to help me in anyway. He wouldn't even allow me to use his phone or even make the call for me. he seemed kinda crazy anyway. I did find a nice couple about a mile further that did let me use the phone and even gave me coffee. She told my there use to be a sign there saying the road was closed during the winter (I guess like the one on 16) but I didn't see it there anymore. Anyway the guy who towed my out had to plow alittle off the top. So be careful, Park just past the bus turn around or you'll get stuck if you go to far. The couple told me its like clockwork on weekends watching the tow trucks head back there to get people. I'm going to try this hike again next week hopefully with better results. I would have posted this sooner to warn people but I did get a hike in yesterday. I hiked to the bar down the street from my house, and proceded to get plowed. Lets just say I woke up rather late today.

Hey Lowlander,

Your Jeep must be wimpy, my Jeep had no problem getting up there. :) Just kidding, we parked at the turn around. What ever possesed you to go up there? That was nasty looking, we could see where you were stuck. Was that pick up truck stuck there when you were there? The tow truck was coming for them as we were leaving. Better luck on your next attempt.

I'm usually inclined to chuckle at people who overestimate the abilties of their SUV's (though if I ever get my hands on one, I'll be out trying to drive up the Matterhorn, no doubt) but this seems like an honest accident happening to a sensible guy, so I'll refrain.

All things considered, I prefer the Barnum Road approach to these three. It makes a nice long out-and-back to Blackhead. Plus, the western approach to Thomas Cole isn't as well traveled and the trail is narrow and dark...almost evocative of the best of Plateau Mountain in places.

I'd suggest saving Plateau for your last peak. Maybe start from the abandoned Mink Hollow Trail and hike to the col, then pass over the summit highpoint, along the long, dark summit ridge and party it up at Orchid Point. Plateau is definitely one of my top five favorites.

My friend Shawn and I went to the summer lot one winter, but this was in the dead of winter, the snow was hard, almost icy and there were 2 nice sets of tracks with no evidence of any slipsliding away. Other than that, ignore the "No parking signs" at the bus turnaround, everybody parks there! We saw your spot where your jeep went in and of course, checked out the P/U truck that was there overnight...

Glad you at least made it out OK, now you have something to tell the kids around the campfire. :)

Yeah I've had a group around me everytime I retold this story. Everytime we're around someone new that hasn't heard it I'm forced to retell it. Oh well, its a good funny story anyway. Of course that wasn't my mind set as I was walking to use a phone. When I pulled up it didn't look that bad, it looked like a plowed road with a couple of inches on it. So I really didn't overestimate my Jeep, it's more that I under-estimated the snow. After I left it looked pretty beat up, I didn't think anyone would try to drive down there again. Too bad the guy got stuck. How far did he make it down? The tow guy said that the truck that got stuck there last week made it to the bend. The guy had to dig out a 15 X 10 area to get the truck out. He backed all the way untill about 100 ft from getting out then got stuck again. The guy gave it the old college try, I'll give him that. This one was really embarassing to post. Even worse than the failed attempt at NE Halcott or the zigzag bushwack on SW Hunter. Well, I guess if it was easy we wouldn't get a patch for it. Besides that I would already have gotten bored with it.

I think I am going to try to finish on Plateau. I hope this next weekend to get two long ones in (the burroughs and the hike I was suppose to do), and the weekend after that the big finally.

The P/U truck looks like he made it about 100-150 feet from the bus turnaround. He also managed to break off his passenger side rearview mirror as it was tossed in the flatbed when we went by... The snow was up to his axles and he was stuck pretty good.
