We have just over a foot here this morning with another 2 feet coming. I know its not as bbad as Hilman but this is a good amount here. Not enough to cripple us but enough that we can have fun in
What do all of you have?

NE PA - We have about 6", but we are getting hammered with sleet since last night. That is fun stuff to shovel in. :)
Keep posting about the Daks, we are headed up there this weekend.
Wish we were getting snow and not sleet.

Not that it helps anyone, but we're at about 10 inches in Western NY, expecting another 7-8 by nightfall. Unless the lake snow machine turns on, then it could be up to a foot more.

WooHoo, we are finally getting snow, turned to snow about an hour ago. WOW, is it coming down. :) We have about 10", granulated and heavy. The stuff that is falling now is fluffy and dry. Think I am going to grab my xc skis and go out and play.
 NOT that any of you are planning an expedition in western CT any time soon...BUT...we have a solid base of about 3 inches of crud and are expecting it to turn over to a steady accumulation of moosh later today followed by a down-pour of frozen slag tonight.
On a brighter note: I'll be in the Whites this weekend.:p

I find it highly suspicious that when Doug was home in Oswego they got hammered with all the lake effect snow, and now that he is here in the High Peaks area hiking this week we're getting a big snowstorm here. Coincidence? I don't think so  :D

Not getting much up here.... a few inches... enough to make cycling difficult. But we didn't NEED it as badly as you-all (except doug) did. We've had great skiing here for about a month.

I was telling people yesterday I went to the mountains to get away from the snow--they thought I was nuts. Anyway, I got home to about 10 inches of fresh on top of about a 4 foot base of consolidated snow. It is still snowing pretty good here, and it doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon.

The contrast between lake effect snow here on the eastern side of the Tug Hill and a large regional storm such as this one is interesting. Here in lake effect country there was prior to today 3+ feet of snow already on the ground, more or less level and of even depth everywhere because it came down vertically without being blown around. Almost always there is little or no wind when a lake effect band is overhead. A few miles away outside of the band the sun can be shining and it can be quite breezy, but when within the falling snow there is little wind. When falling the heaviest it is dead calm.
What the media will typically call "heavy" lake effect falls at a rate of anywhere from 1-3 inches per hour. Sometimes it gets up to 5 in/hr. At 2 in/hr I can see down my long driveway to the road. At 5 in/hr I can literally hardly see my outstretched hand. Individual lake effect snowflakes are almost always large and fluffy soft, floating down gently. Its fun and inviting to walk in vertical snow coming down really hard. When falling at 5 in/hr, if you take in a deep breath you will literally have a choking sensation from all the fluffy snow coming in your mouth with the air. Deadly silent, all sound is suppressed by the fluff. It's a spooky feeling.
Contrast that with the current regional storm. The flakes are tiny and fine, its not difficult to see trees several hundred yards away. We had a few fresh inches deposited overnight on the ground here on the eastern edge of the Tug Hill, not that much but I didn't go out to measure it. It's been coming down steadily but I had to wonder where the storm was because it didn't seem to be falling all that heavy when compared to the recent lake effect events. Then the wind started mid-morning with a roar. It's been blowing very strong out of the north for several hours now, definitely not fun or inviting. I don't think the snowfall rate has increased, but the visibility is drastically reduced from the blowing snow. I have no idea how much has fallen or how anyone would go about measuring it. The snow in my yard has developed large drifts, and the previously flat nearby field looks like rolling sand dune terrain. Parts of my driveway are blown bare, parts have drifts over 3 feet high and getting larger. I've got some work to do before I can get out of here.
5:30 PM update says right here we've received 21 inches today. Very lumpily distributed, wind still blowing very hard. The temperature hasn't budged from zero all day. More heavy lake effect due to arrive tomorrow.

Hardly any snow fell in Montreal today but Environment Canada is still calling for 8-16'' by thursday. Cold and windy to boot.

I'd go measure again but I can't get out the door.
I've got well over two feet and a lot of drift!!
Officially, a couple of hours ago, we had 14.3 inches in Albany. Unofficially, I'm sure we're 3-4 inches over that in my back yard, but it's blowing hard, so it's hard to tell. I've shoveled a path through the snow to the driveway, in order to assist the paramedics when I have a heart attack as a result of shoveling snow...
But this is Albany and there are no mountains, so who cares?
I suspect the Catskills had much more...?

to answer my own question...
I just spoke to a gentleman up there while trying to make a hotel reservation for this weekend. He told me that they presently have about 20 inches in Lake Placid and the snow is falling at its heaviest...at a rate of 3 inches an hour.

We have had no snow until yesterday. Literally the grass was still somewhat green and still showing through the dusting we have had. Right now it is still snowing pretty hard with about 30 inches that I measured. They are predicting high winds here tonight. Gusts up to 40 MPH so this should make for some drifting
My wife is a school teacher and school was canceled today and she just got a phone call for tomorrow about 10 min ago.

Just came in from shoveling and snow blowing. Here in New Paltz we had sleet for most of last night, but it changed to snow at noon time. I figure we have about 12".
Nice to finally see some winter even if I have to shovel it.

The streets inthe village are terrible. The snowplow only went down my daughter's road 4 times since the storm started and she's at an even higher elevation than we are with more snow.

We got relatively lucky - 21"-25" (depending) in the Rochester area over 24 hours. A few persistent snow bands coming off the lake, but we are pretty much done.
Sky's are blue and it's dead calm for now, just cold (1 degree). Expecting some heavier winds later to blow stuff around, but we pretty much got out lucky.
Every few years, we get wacked with a huge snow drop, usually the back side of a Nor'easter that churns up the -LAKE EFFECT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_effect_snow)- machine. Anywhere from 24"-40" in a single event is common (I do remember one 50"+ drop a fews years back). We're not as bad Syracuse, but we average about 100" a year (vs. 115" in Syracuse). So in the scheme of things, given the reasonable rate of fall, crews were well ahead of the snow.
This biggest problem now is what to do with all that snow that has accumulated on abut 1200' miles of roads (main & side streets).
All and all, this just means a better SKI SEASON than once predicted.
I got about 38" sitting in my yard. anyone who feels shortchanged can have some of mine.

According to the folks at the Keene post office today the Lake Placid road is closed due to 12 foot drifts on Cascade... and a snow plow is stuck up there  :D
Obviously they'll be opening it up asap.
UPDATE 4:00pm: The road is still closed and traffic is being diverted around to Jay and Wilmington. I spoke to one of the drivers and he said they are hoping to have it open by 5pm more or less.

When planning your hike this weekend consider the possibility that the trailhead may not be plowed. I know it's only Thursday, so probably everything will be cool by Saturday. But I did just check the Garden and the St. Huberts trailheads. Neither are plowed as of Thursday 3pm. The Roaring Brook trailhead is also unplowed.

Nothing beats shovelling out a spot to get warmed up for a hike!
Reminds me of being a kid and going around the neighborhood with a shovel earning money. Maybe I'll just spend the weekend at a trailhead with a shovel.
Good thought. And I will bring a grille and lotsa hot chocolate.
We'll make a killing.
But I'm gonna flip the burgs while you bust your butt shoveling
