I couldn't make it last year for my 35, was backpacking in CT on the AT. I will be honored to make it for my winter 35 especially in such great company. :) Best of luck to all of us trying to finish up this winter.

Just a friendly reminder that if you are very close to finishing your 35, you might want to give a heads up to David White, for he is the Zen Master for the patches. If you tell him ahead of time and he believes/trusts you, you can hand in your paperwork the night of the dinner and you'll get your certificate and stuff.
There will be a hike the day of the event somewhere, but we can start a different thread for that...
Jay
Jay, if you are still wondering where winter is, I have the answer for you! :D

Some people who attended last year told me about a rowdy table or 2 calling for a food fight, is this the one? If so put me on the tentative list.

I plan on finishing the winter 35 the last winter weekend in March and will definitely know before the dinner. That would be cool to get my certificate that night. :)
Food fight; mashed potatoes on a spoon fly great. I think Mudhook needs to be seated across from me. :)

Cindy, I'm not to sure how the knee is healing....truthfully I'm a little worried that the hiking might affect or (effect) just plain old walking...I don't know if the pain is due to drop in temp, damp, to much fat on my gut, arthritis, 3rd scope, overdid it in LA, exercising?....so many variables....I have dropped 8 lbs in Jan to reduce weight....trying to continue....but I'm shooting for March to hike and will cross my fingers...thx

Here is the response I received from David White, when I inquired about the "deadline" for making it into the '07 membership list. Looks like we got a good two months of hiking left
Good news - you can get tallies in by April 7th. You could even stretch it beyond that if you send in a preliminary tally so I could start to craft a letter to you. A requirement of membership is being a subscriber to the canister before, or paying the annual dues as you become a member. The subscription/dues are $10 and $7 for a second member sharing one mailing. (The associate rate is not necessary for a subscriber only - your name is just not on the label - but it is required to be a voting member and to be listed in the roster when you are a member.) In addition, there is a $5 pp application fee for your patch, card, letter, and certificate (not the $10 listed on the website.) There is a similar fee of $2 pp for the winter patch, letter and certificate. Here is where I am not sure whether I understand you. Were you referring to only the four winter peaks or a full winter round? Some people think they can climb 35 in winter and get that patch before being a regular member. Keep in mind that when you climb a peak in winter, it counts for both winter and summer (if you want)! You just need to climb Balsam, Panther, Slide, and Blackhead twice. Plus, you need to be a regular 3500 Club member (39 peaks plus the 4 a second time) in order to be a 3500 Club winter member - so just be sure you've met the requirements for regular membership first.
Thanks,
Dave

I understand the requirements for the regular 3500 membership.
For the winter requirement do the winter ascents of Balsam, Slide, Blackhead & Panther count towards the winter patch? If someone was to complete the 35 in the non-winter seasons plus the 4 required winter ascents could they get there winter patch by just climbing the other 31 peaks again? What if all 39 ascents were done in winter? Would the person be eligible for both membership patches at the same time?

Is it required that one has completed the 39/39 to attend? I'm curious about it but I may not finish everything I want to finish by April 7th, though it wouldn't be too hard to do so.

meijin - No idea if you need to be a completer or current member to attend the meeting/dinner. My inquiry was based on when I needed to submit my Tally Sheet in order to be part of this years Membership list. I interpreted Davids response to indicate, that if I/you was going to be complete by the dinner, April 14th, that we could give David a preliminary list and then have the remaining 7 days to complete the list - it is a dinner meeting after all, so ya can really cut it close and do your last hike that morning!:D
Ian - if I understand Davids response correctly (and based on other things I've read on the 3500 listserv and the various forums), that it is possible to get both the Regular and Winter patches all at one shot, so long as one climbed the 39 during the defined winter months. Since the requirement for the Regular membership is the 35, plus the 4 winter ascents, it is possible to climb all 35 during winter, and then reclimb the 4 again during winter, and qualify for both patches. I think we'd need to clarify with David as to whether one could hike the 35 in winter, and complete the remaining 4 outside of winter, and still qualify for both patches - I'm thinking about his last sentence:
Plus, you need to be a regular 3500 Club member (39 peaks plus the 4 a second time) in order to be a 3500 Club winter member - so just be sure you've met the requirements for regular membership first.
- it's the statement about being a "regular club member first" that leads me to think that - but I'm splitting hairs - and since most of my first ascents have been in non-winter, not something I'm concerned about. If I get my winter rocker, I'll have long since completed my first round.
...now back to our regularly scheduled thread :D

No, you are not required to be a member, aspirants are welcome to attend the dinner. Only members can vote on business that is brought up for vote. That is a very small part of the evening.

From my understanding if you hiked all 35 peaks above 3500' you would qualify for the winter patch. However, you wont qualify for the regular 3500 club patch til you do the 4 peaks (slide, balsam, panther, blackhead) again. And you can actually hike them both again in winter and it'll count. Basically you have to hike those 4 peaks twice though the club doesn't really care if it's twice in winter or once in non-winter and once in winter.
The dinner is open to aspirants too... you coming mtnmeijin? :)

What Dave means is that you can not do the 35 (as opposed to the 39) in Winter and get your Winter patch first, you have to qualify for the all-season patch before (or at the same time as) you qualify for the Winter patch.
You can indeed 're-use' the 4 required winter climbs towards your W35, I did. But I've also re-climbed those 4 in Winter just for yucks! :D

You can count me in too Jay. I should finish up the first or second week of March. I'm scheduled to work the 14th but I'm trying to get leave. I'll know March 1st whether or not I got it.
I'm tempted to come...I've never been. What's the cost?
Unfortunately, the cost is not included in the current version of the newsletter, but it is not outrageous. The next newsletter promises to have the details, as well as a sign-up form.
They do list the speaker as talking about "Bears in the Catskills".

I met with Ed G. (the 3500 club treasurer) and Terri and Dawn last night at a diner by Central Valley to help audit the finances of last year (I tried to skim some of the profits, but the rest wouldn't let me... )
The dinner should be roughly $32 which includes a good dinner, a c o c k tail hour with hordeurv...hors d'ors..... ahhh FOOD and fabulous company (like me) and a great speaker.
Lowlander:I've added you!

p.s. I guess I can't write "********************"

BTW, to my count, we have 19 folks, which basically means if everybody does make it, we have room for 1 more...
Maybe we can ebay it?
BTW, the actual form with the food choices and stuff should be out in the "canister" very soon... you'll see the actual price there.. If you don't get the Canister (the 3500 club newsletter), we can relay information to you I think or better yet, fork over your $10 and get it.
Jay

I think I'd like to come. I tried to join yahoo to post on the 3500 message board but was unable to...so I'll have to wait for the next issue of the Canister to get all the facts. But it definitely interests me, so put me down if there's room. If a seat opens up, is it alright to bring a friend?
Jay H

Since folks should be receiving the Canister with the form on it any day now, I request that when you do fill it out and send in the form with the check, to write
"VFTT" on it. I've emailed the organizer (not hikethe115 this year) to tell him that we're going to be having 2 or 3 tables this year and to group the ones with that moniker on it together. If you are going with a friend/spouse/etc and want to sit together, just send in the forms together and put down VFTT again, on it...

If people can not join, we should tell them there is a problem...
Just got 'The Canister', and the price is in fact $32.00 per person. Sounds a little steep perhaps, but that includes hors d'oeuvre, salad, dinner, dessert, tax and tip. So, go hiking and show up hungry! :D

I'm sorry I'm going to miss it this year. It sounds like you have a great group. If you don't fill in the third table, then Mike will just fill it in with people who have not requested to sit with specific people. He will wait until the deadline to assign tables. Have fun everyone!
