Hello. Long time lurker, occasional poster (used to log in as 'MD Cuse' but that didn't work anymore so I created this new account).
Actually decided to post again as I have a question which I'll pose in another forum. While I was posting I figured I'd throw a little trip report summary for myself covering the past few months.
I have a son who turned 1 in April, and we now have another one on the way, so needless to say I haven't been able to get out and hit the high peaks as much as I used to. I have however done a ton of hiking, thanks to one of those child carrier packs my parents got me for Christmas.
We have a family camp up in the Old Forge/Inlet area so between there and some places here in Central New York I try to get out twice a week. Not wanting to push things too much, and trying to work around his lunch, naps, etc we've hit a bunch of areas that don't attract the big crowds but are wonderful nonetheless.
Some of the highlights from the past few months:
- Bald Mountain (Old Forge). Great little mountain with awesome views of Fulton Chain of Lakes. Fire Tower has been refurbished and is now open.
- Black Bear Mountain (Inlet). Another hidden gem that has a few different trails to the wide open summit. Was able to see north to Blue Mtn the day we were up top. Have seen all the way to Marcy in the past when not hazy.
- Fern Park (Inlet). Town maintained hiking/biking/skiing trails. Miles and miles of trails. Nothing spectacular to look at but just some real nice woods to walk through. Had two wolves run right by us when up there yesterday.
- Cascade Lake (Big Moose). Six mile loop around this lake highlighted by a nice waterfall at one end.
- Moss Lake (Big Moose). 2.5 mile loop around this great little lake that is home to a number of loons.
- Bubb and Sis Lakes (Eagle Bay). Can access from both RT 28 and via Moss Lake. Couple of hidden gems with plenty of places to just hang out and enjoy the scenery.
- Moose River Mtn (Thendara). Seldom used trail that used to have a fire tower at top. Nothing really to see but the walk through the woods to get there is worth it.
- Castle Rock (Blue Mtn Lake). Trickly trail to follow but leads to an open rock just above Blue Mtn Lake that provides spectacular views.
- Rocky Mtn (Inlet). Quick and steep half mile hike to wide open summit overlooking 4th Lake and the towns of Inlet & Eagle Bay. Got to remember to come back up here for 4th of July fireworks in the future.
Nothing too difficult but when you've got a 22 lb kid on your back, a couple lbs of supplies, and a 7 lb pack it gives you a good workout. I hope to bring him up Cascade later this summer for his intro to the high peaks.
Here in CNY we go to Baltimore Woods, Beaver Lake, Erie Canal Park, Clark's Reservation, Pratt's Falls, Onondaga Lake Park, and a few other places. It's not the Adks but when home for the weekend they are a good alternative.
For myself I did Street/Nye on Memorial Day (a snap) weekend and Wright/Algonquin/Iroquois this past Friday (started too early - 5:00 AM - and everything was socked in up top with 50 mph winds). Have four days set aside at the end of this month to get out and hit the peaks with some buddies who are trying to finish up their 46.
Anyway, just thought I'd drop a little note and say 'hi' again. If you see a little guy being carried around in a blue Kelty pack with a black bear attached to the side that's us.
