View Full Version : Emergency Phone Numbers for NY
I just came across the Emergency numbers to call in the ADKs and Catskills to get the quickest response for a back country emergency. These are both DEC numbers, said to be manned 24/7.
ADKs - (518) 891-0235
Cats - (845) 255-1323
I just put them in my cell phone. It doesn't always work in the woods, but you never know...
Why not call 911? If you are way out in the woods, a 911 dispatcher would not know what fire/rescue company to call. Quick, what is the closest fire company to Allen, or Rocky? Do you even know what township you are in? Do they have any clue where the mountain is? You get the picture...
Thank you Tom, i know those numbers but it is a good reminder.
It is a good idea to put the # in my cell phone.
I am going to put it right away tonight before i leave for my tomorrow's hike.
If I'm going on a solo bwck I leave the number along with a jpeg of my route on the desktop of my PC. If, God forbid, I get stuck in the woods with an immobilizing injury my loving wife can phone the number and email the jpeg while telling "them" that I have a radio with me. The weak link of course is the PC. If there's a power failure or the machine goes south I would be SOL.

The Catskill phone number is actually the New Paltz PD, not DEC. However, it's as good as a central number for the Cats, both Region's 3 and 4.
Per Allen -- I knew a bloke who was running down the Allen slide. He tripped, landed on his head and was knocked cold. His son met up with a pair of hikers who dialed the 891 number - Ray Brook - and he was rescued and carried out by DEC to a waiting chopper.

Good idea Neil

Great suggestions Tom,
For my summer forays to the ADK’s, I made an email template w/ distribution list with myself (so it would be on my computer) and family/friends.

Wow some people are organized. I'll write the names of the montains I'm climbing on a paper stuck to the fridge. If I'm with someone, I simply say 'The Adirondacks' and maybe leave the email address of the person I'm with.
Years ago I used to leave detailed information, but I've kind of given up doing that.

Reminds me of a funny story. I remember when we first started hiking and me and ADKatie would take the rugrats into woods to camp, peakbag, etc. We would religiously leave a detailed trip itinarary with my {non-hiking/non-outdoorsy} parents. I remember one particular trip, we came out after a couple day in and first thing I did when I got out was to call them and let them know we were out safe. Keep in mind, we're with our 6 and 9 year old kids too. My mom was like -
"Oh honey, thats right, I forgot you kids were in the Adirondacks this weekend, did you have fun?"
Nowadays, for a trail, just a mountain name (perhaps), but bushwhaking I TRY to be a little more specific. Still. I assume we're on our own, for at least a day or so.

Yup, in today’s world of instant communication, everyone expects to be able to get a hold of you at a moments notice. I find that my daughters, 18, 18 and 16 and (their generation) having grown up with email and cell phones and my work associates having email, blackberries, cell phones, voicemail, etc. all expect instant or timely responses. :whip:
Sending out the global email is my (Nice Way) of saying, “Don’t bother Me” as I’m going hiking. (I refuse to take a cell phone or email when I’m out. Everyone knows there’s no cell coverage WAY out there.);)

Oh yeah. If hiking with others, I'll sometimes give someone my home phone number and instructions to call and tell my family, in case of my death.
It may sound weird, but think about it. You're hiking with someone. The sucker up and dies on you.... What you gonna do? Post on the net, "Help needed, Xxxxx just died, and I have to tell his family. Anyone have a phone number?"

This might depend on who you're hiking with. To some people, this might appear to be an invitation.

Imagine hiking with someone for the first time and they say, "by the way, if I die do you mind calling my wife? The number's on a slip of paper in my pocket."

Necomb FD and Claryville(or Olive#3).
North Hudson, Keene, or Necomb depending on where you are, for Allen.
Denning,Shandaken, for Rocky.
Most wouldn't have a clue.
I know this because as a VF,a firehouse used to be a good place to stop for a cold beer with strangers and I still look, just in case.:)

If you need help AND your PC fails is a risk I'd be willing to take. Sounds like you're pretty organized.
I say, Kath I'm climbing Sentinel with Neil, some guy from the Internet, if I'm late don't wait up. Don't worry the life insurance is paid up and I'm sure this guy Neil is a friendly guy.
Or another time, Kath, I'm going to climb Giant and Rocky Ridge on Saturday with some guy named HarryK. We're going to stay in some cheap motel. Sunday I'm climbing Iroquois. I'm sure this HarryK is a nice guy, he has a lot of posts on VFTT.

If I'm hiking with other's I often say "In case something happens to me, the car keys are in_________ (fill in the blank)." :^))

You know, you gotta keep them on their toes all the time. Live ain't fun otherwise.
