I need nine peaks to finish my 3500's including Vly and Bearpen. I was thinking about possibly doing both on Sunday and was wondering if there are any problems with parking for the Vly Mtn. bushwack off of Halcott Mt. rd.

I never had a problem from the Prattsville side. Please be aware that rifle season is on until 12-7.Just past the last house on the right there is a parking spot on the right near a plow blade. The last time I was up there the canister on Vly was missing.Wear something red or orange.

Then park. Then walk up to the col, and for Vly, follow the herd path / blazes to the right. This takes you right to the summit.

I just want to repeat the "be careful it's hunting season" mantra. I've lived in the Catskills for almost a dozen years and this is one of the busiest hunting seasons I can remember. The Vly/Bearpen area is a a heavily hunted one as well and remember you will be bushwhacking (sort of!). I've decided to head to Vermont this weekend, their hunting season ended this past sunday!

Thanks for the info and advice. I figure if I do these two peaks this weekend I will wear my blaze orange hunters hat.

If I get an early start up to New york State and get up to the Catskills by 7:00 a.m. I may end up doing Balsam Cap and Friday from the woodland valley side. I figure there may be less hunting pressure over there as the walk in is much further. Either way the blaze orange will be on.
