Strange question here.. Anybody know of a place near the catskills which serve buffalo burgers? I checked Brio's menu and the associated sister restaurants to no luck.
A friend of a friend of mine said to go have a Buffalo burger when you're up in the catskills which is strange because since when are the catskills famous for buffalo. I have never seen one in the woods. I had a buffalo burger when I was by Yellowstone but not in the catskills... But I said I'd look...

Oddly enough, there once was an eastern bison which was a woodlands animal, smaller then its western cousin. They went extinct possibly pre contact, not sure why.
I also am not sure how far into the northeast that they ranged, possibly into the Catskills, but I doubt if they were in the Adirondacks. The western ones handle winter well, but on the plains.
Buffalo meat is delicious and has much less fat then beef. Hopefully you can find a place.

It might have something to do with the Game Farm closing...
Call the Roscoe Diner in Roscoe, see if it's still on the menu there;
"In the Catskills I stay at the Rockland house, I like to eat there or go to the Roscoe Diner for a buffalo burger and fries.

I know on the Blue Ridge Highway, they have a Buffalo Farm and sell meat there. If ever in that neck of the woods, you could buy yourself a pound of Buffalo Burger, take it home and fry it up.
Hey Hawk, what does Buffalo taste like, more or less like beef? I want to try it out sometime.

I was a teen the last time I was in Yellowstone, I kind of remember it as being a lean beef flavor, perhaps a little hint of being gamey.
Roscoe is pretty far west on rt 17..it's even past Livingston Manor...
Hawk: I don't know if I want to eat the meat from the Buffalo that used to roam NY many years ago, I have my limits! :D

And yet you'll eat thousand year old eggs ?
I think some of the Mastadons that have been found frozen might be worth a Weber.

I don't eat them either but I see them in Chinese food markets though and my parents have eaten them before...

I used to see buffalo burgers on the menu of quite a few of the diners here in the Hudson Valley... And by diners, I am talking about Greek one's, not the mom & pop greasy spoons...

it tastes like bison!!!
it's similar to beef I guess but leaner. A lot depends on the cut as well. The hump right behind the neck is the tenderest cut and my favorite.
The tongue is very good also, a delicacy, as is the liver (although i draw the line at the traditional way of eating it raw, I had to do that once at a ceremony).
I've been to that farm in Blue Ridge as well as one in Massachusetts. Many of my Native friends from out west bring me buffalo as well as elk when they come visit.
Elk is excellent too, especially when grilled over an applewood fire.
Oddly enough, there once was an eastern bison which was a woodlands animal, smaller then its western cousin. They went extinct possibly pre contact, not sure why.
Here is some information I found:
Last killed in 1825 at Valley Head, WV; Cory (1912) states last killed in Wisconsin in 1833
Forest meadow herd grazer ranged from Cape Cod to Kentucky
Disappeared after hunting for hides and meat

When I was growing up in Palmyra NY, there was a farmer who kept a few Bison in field right off RT 21 near Manchester. He was a friend of my Grandfather and we would go feed them through the fence. At that point in my life I never thought about eating them:D . I did have Buffalo Steaks in Jackson Hole a few years ago--pretty good--very lean.

The buffalo burgs that Sky speaks of are mighty tasty, good eatin'.
They're pricey tho - I think they were 4 patties for $6. And they passed along to me when I bought 'em to cook 'em no more than medium, and that they're really meant to be med-rare.
And they're good stuff.

I've definetly seen both Buffalo and Ostrich burgers at the diner on Warren Street in Hudson, NY - may not be a mom and pop, but it's defintly "greasy"!. Also fairly sure I've seen 'em at the Diner in Taghanik (Rte 82, the Ancram/Hudson exit on the Taconic State Parkway). Possibly the diner in Catskill as well, though that one fits into the "Greek" diner category.

The only diners I know of in the catskills region (at least the high peaks region) is the one on Rt 23A east about a mile east of where Rt 214 spits you out on Rt 23A. There is one way out on Rt 17 by Livingston Manor too that I passed...
Can't think of another one though and I've only eaten breakfast at the diner I mention above.

There are" buff" in a field below Roundtop Mt. , the one north of Bearpen. Its quite comical when they get out and the local sheriff has to round them up. Maybe you could rustle one ?
You can get ostridge(sp) meat and burgers at the osteridge(sp again) emu ranch between the Bisquick PA and the Slide PA on the Big Indian-Claryville Rd. Most large game is much more healthy and flavory than farm raised, hormone, grain fed beef.

I haven't tried it yet, but I think Cassie's Kitchen in Andes has it, and I know the Neptune Diner does (way out in Oneonta). There's also a Buffalo farm that I think sells meat in the ADKs on 28N before the Upper Works Rd turnoff.

You can find Buffalo burgers in quite a few NYC diners. I've had a few and they tasted fine, just like a decent/free range/non fast food burger that comes from 1 cow...... as opposed to processed burgers containing bits from 1,000's of cows ala McDonald's or Wendy's..... yuck
Buffalo and Ostrich meat can be purchased at Hannaford Supermarkets. There's ground buffalo and sometimes tenderloins. I've had the ostrich ... it's okay but nothing extraordinary.
We buy buffalo meat from the farm near Newcomb (on the Blue Ridge Rd) every couple of months. The tubes of ground buffalo are a bit tastier than the premade patties. No idea why, but they are.
There's also an elk farm on Rt 80, south of Ft. Plain ... we've purchased some of their meat and it's pretty good too.
You can also get buffalo burgers at Ruby Tuesday's. There's a couple local "diners" around here (Fulton-Montgomery Counties) that sell them as well.
I had one in Skagway, Alaska once, but that's a little far to go!:) Took us an hour to get served, also!

There is a buffalo farm not far from me in Castleton NY: http://www.gemfarmsbuffalo.com/. Wow...for just $500 you can get a whole calf (http://www.gemfarmsbuffalo.com/buffalocalves.htm)
I've never been there but this thread has reminded me that its there. I'll have to go soon.
Looks like they even sell Rocky Mountain Oysters:eek:
Yeah....Dick, was that at the Red Onion Saloon (the ex brothel!)?

Yep, that's the place...except I didn't know it had changed hands when I went in...:)

Adams in Poughkeepsie sometimes stocks 'exotic' meats in one of their coolers, I will hae to take a look tonight when I stop by... If they have in POK, they may have it in their Kingston store as well. There used to be a farm out in Stormville, NY that also raised bison/buffalo, although I am not sure if they are still around.
we ought to get something to grill up friday night at sundown

I'm thinking about stopping at the Hannafords in Kingston...in search of buffalo burger patties..
I was going to bring my $12 portable grill and some Kingsford charcoal and grill up some burgers if we can find them at Hannafords...If not, I guess cow burgers will have to do..

Been there! But didn't have a buffalo burger... Thanks Kevin...
Oh, give me a home
Where the buffalo burgers roam,
Where the deer and the porcupines play;
Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

There is a Hannaford's in Kingston... maybe we can stop by!!! I don't think I have seen buffalo on the local menus. Jay, there are two Hannafords in Kingston. One in the Shopping Plaza not far from the Thruway exit (a left at the 2nd light on Washington Ave, then a left at a light into the Plaza). The other is on the north side of town, US 9W, not far south of US 209. There is also an Adams just on US 9W, just north of US 209. I have never looked for buffalo at any of these so I do not know which would have the best chances.
There are an ever growing number of buffalo ranches and farms in the Hudson Valley. I frequently bicycle past the Thruview Farm, Old Kings Hwy, on a hill overlooking the NYS thruway. I rode by today and there were about 8 buffalo out grazing on the hill. It is always cool to see them. It is opposite the south-bound service plaza between the Saugerties and Kingston exits, located here (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.01186&lon=-73.99617&size=l), It is a small operation, and mostly a standard dairy farm. I don't think they sell any products at the farm. The scenery is nowhere as nice as that Blue Ridge Road buffalo ranch in the Adirondacks, but it does have a distant view of the Catskills. I have also occasionally heard of local farmers raising the hybrid beefalo.
Another somewhat unusual road side sight. The Catskill Mountain Lodge (http://www.dailyfreeman.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=7157266&BRD=1769&PAG=461) at the county line sign on State Route 32A in Palenville features a buffalo statue outside. The owner was a big game hunter, and there are many stuffed heads inside, including one buffalo. But there is no buffalo (other than the chicken with buffalo sauce ) on the menu, per their website (http://www.catskillmtlodge.com/).
Since it was briefly mentioned, the bison bull from the Catskill Game Farm sold at auction (http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061019/NEWS/610190326/-1/NEWS14) for $750. I don't know who bought him nor the other three bison that were up for sale.

I had a buffalo* burger in S.Dakota once at Wall Drug, had it with a warm beer. The burger was good, the beer was a rip-off. Wall Drug may have the worlds record for BILLBOARD SIGNS directing you to it from hundreds of miles away; repeatedly.
I don;t hear anyone talking about having eaten an ostrich burger. That one seems a little weird to me. Also about $18/lb.
*FWIW If ya ever go out to S. Dakota and happen to mention 'buffalo' to a local, you will be quickly corrected & informed that it's a North American Bison and not a buffalo. Buffalo is a windy city with a lousy football team.

I've only been to the Hannafords by the Kingston Circle...
I've seen the big buffalo by Palenville, he/she doesn't look that edible!
I've had an ostrich burger before. there is a local burger place that has them and I believe Fuddruckers (a chain) sells them too. Again, it's like very lean beef.
Has anybody tried a porcupine burger??????
Jay

Actually if you really want to get on the wrong side of the locals, call it a Tatanka (actually pronounced Da Dan Ka).
The caucasians will think you're an Indian Sympathizer, the
Lakota will think that you are patronizing them.
