For any of you guys that have been over to ADKForum lately, they just went through the vBulletin upgrade package. I've tooled around in it and they really have some nice features to it. I've hesitated to upgrade because it's a major PITA.

Well, this weekends crappy forecast ruined my hiking plans so, I think I'm gonna put myself through the torture of the upgrade process. Be warned, there might be a slight interruption in service while the I figure it all out and work out the kinks. Don't be alarmed if you visit and get the "site down" message.

WISH ME LUCK, and if all goes well we'll be all set by Sunday with the new changes.

What I'm amazed at is that you're letting a little rain/snow mix and 50 mile an hour wind keep you from hiking! That just sounds like the perfect set up for a "No s***, there I was" story!

As I noted in the forum upgrade thread on adkforum, there's a plugin available that works with the vbulletin software that allows for 'on-the-fly' spell checking. On adk forum, look on the upper right corner of any screen where you're typing a message (just a note - quick reply doesn't have it since it has no advanced options, you have to go into the full text editor). There's an "abc" with a check mark button.

I haven't tried it because my spellering is imperfectible!

Took me about 2 hours Tim. Just make sure you do a full backup before you upgrade, and be prepared to lose any hacks/customizations you've made... colors and pics for the forum's layout won't change though.

I have always ignored the quick reply option, but the mention of it has me curious. Is it an option that the owner chooses to make available? I see that Darren does not have it over there. Will it be enhanced or become obsolete after the upgrade? If it still exists after this weekend, can someone point me to directions for using it?

Just below each post, to the right is the quote option and another icon to its right. That small square shaped icon enabled the quick reply feature to become ungrayed and functional at the bottom of the thread. Type your message, hit submit. Rinse, repeat. :D

The admin can choose to make quick reply always available (so you don't have to click anything to activate it), or remove it altogether. I personally use it, and think it's a great feature they added when they went from v2 to v3 two years ago.

Well, actually the hike was mostly just an opportunity to bushwhack with old friends. Plans kinda fell through and the destination was never really that important to me and Nick (though we do need it for a list :D ). When plans fell through, we just decided to save on the 10 hr. trek to play in 100% chance of freezing rain.

As for the upgrade, I've done the requisite reasearch. Not real worried at this point. It should go fairly smoothly and a will be probably nuking the chat format as it's rarely used. I'll look into spell check once the move is complete.

2 hours seems right. I plan on doing it Sat. AM, or late tonight. On second thought, I'm going out to dinner tonight and will likely come home with a couple beers in me. While that might make it the upgrade smoother on my end, I'm not sure it's the best for the forum. Lord knows, I can't ill afford another UWI ** on my record. :D

The last one put the forum down for 4 months.

Only thing I've noticed so far is that when I click on a smilie I don't get it.

Attempting smilie....

nothing.

Also, the "thumbs up" smilie shows as text, not as a graphic.

Adding links has changed. Before you got one dialogue box where you enter the text that became the hyperlink followed by a second box where you entered the target.

Now you only get one dialogue box. You enter the target and unless you know what to edit the software will display the entire URL as the hyperlinked text.

It looks like this until you edit the portion between the square bracket: ] and

Behind the scenes the above looks like: ( I changed the square bracket for a curly one so it would display as it appears while creating the post)
{URL="http://neil.webcentre.ca/outdoor%20pursuits/trapdike/
index.html"]http://neil.webcentre.ca/outdoor%20pursuits/trapdike/index.html

They've made it easier. Simply type the text first, then highlight the text you want to make a link, and then select the globe/link in the menu. This will bring up the URL box. Type or paste it in and click okay. The selected text will become the link.

I will demonstrate NOW (http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/) .

In fact all the formatting works the same type the message, select the text you want formated and then click the format. It will create the brackets for you.

Aha! Just like bolding text or underlining it. Write, highlight and click! Makes sense to me. I wondered why an upgrade would make things more complicated...

Tim,
When I'm at the top forum level or when I'm replying to a thread (such as right now) the Search and Quick Links dropdowns work as expected, but in other forums they seem to be dead (i.e., don't dropdown).

When I'm at the top forum level or when I'm replying to a thread (such as right now) the Search and Quick Links dropdowns work as expected, but in other forums they seem to be dead (i.e., don't dropdown). I have seen this also. It is very intermittent, and seems to randomly occur on all pages. Sometimes the drop downs work, and some times they don't.

The phenomena happens both with IE and Firefox. With IE when the page download completes, if see "Done" in the lower left of the window, then the drop downs work. If I see a yellow triangle warning symbol with a ! in it, and "Done, but with errors on page", then the drop downs do not work. With Firefox I always just see "Done" in the lower left corner, and then it is potluck if the drop downs do or do not work.

Edit, OK I sometimes see "Done, but with errors on page" with Firefox. In that case the drop downs don't work. But when I see just "Done" with Firefox the drop down work intermittently.

UWI ** - Upgrading while intoxicated  :D

That's a new one!

I'm keeping an ever growing list. I've seen:

hiking
cycling
motorcycling
running
motorboating
horse riding
flying

I'll bet there are more! :DI'll tell you one you probably haven't seen. Unicycling while intoxicated. Try it sometime, and you'll see that it's impossible.

Here's another one I just noticed. When I left click on a user name to the left of their post I expect a dropdown with choices such as "Send a private message to <so-and-so>" In many/most cases I don't get this dropdown.

Note that everything I've had trouble with so far has workarounds. Also, if it matters, I use Firefox.

I've had the same problems with the drop downs. But it's a sometimes thing, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

The multiquote doesn't work for me here either, but does on the ADKforum.

I use Firefox, but I have used IE, and Opera as well with the same results, so it isn't browser specific.

When Kevin upgraded the adkforum the time before this (not this version), I had the same problem for a while but it eventually straightened itself out.

Tim, make sure you've reverted any modified style vars and templates in the admincp. ANYTHING other than basic cosmetic layout settings from the prior verison has to be fully reverted (in this case reverting means 'back to 3.6.2'). Not doing so can result in bugs like the ones we''re seeing. I had 40 items to revert after adk forum was upgraded. There's a way to revert them all, but since I don't have admin access anymore I couldn't tell you the exact menu (it's in the tables/languages section I think, where the nitty-gritty forum changes are made).

Mavs00
