Thinking about taking a friend and his dog (and son) up the Placid Slide on Whiteface. I remember there is a steep scramble at the end. Do you think a dog could find its way to the top?

Do you think a dog could find its way to the top?If you exit to the right, it is not as steep. I came down it this way. But there is some thick blowdown in this area, and we had to force our way under, around, and over for a short time. There was no herd path that we could find. How big is the dog?
The top area of the slide runs along under the stair case all the way to the tower base. There may be a way to get from the slide to the stairs, I'm not sure, I didn't try.
Make sure you wave to the tourists as you go up the last part of the slide! :D

Did the trip on Sunday with dog. The main slide and the exit at the top did not pose a problem. But the bushwhack up the brook ... ah, I hadn't considered that. The dog frequently had to be pushed, pulled and lifted over boulders clogging the stream. The steep slabs just below the main slide also proved difficult. Long story short: Got back to the trailhead well after dark.
I've done this slide three times now. Each time I've bushwhacked a long way up the brook. I left the trail at the point where it diverges from the brook or shortly after and then bushwhacked through the woods till I felt like going down into the brook. It occurs to me that it might be easier to continue on the hiking trail much longer, perhaps a half-mile or more, and then cut over through the woods to the brook. Anybody tried this?

It's much easier. The woods are quite open. I took the brook the first time I did it, but not the other three times.

Anybody tried this? That's pretty much what we did when we came down a few weeks ago. The stream bed was getting nasty, so we took to the open woods to the left, and hit the trail before we expected to. But that was fine! :D

Exactly where did you exit at the top? Straight up to the stairs? Under the summit towards your right?
Avoiding the creek bed for as long as possible would be my advice to anyone asking me. Eventually, the creek bed becomes the better option. (albeit my opinion is based on only one descent of the slide and brook). There are some steep sidewalls as you near the near the bottom of the slide slide that would have to be avoided.
There sure are a lot of historical "artifacts" on that mountain aren't there?

Neil, we went to the very top of the slide, where the cliffs start. Then we went right up a sort of ramp, around a corner and onto the walkway. It was easy, even with a dog. I thought that would be the hardest part, but I was wrong.

Before doing it my first time, I was advised to go about a mile above the leanto before leaving the trail. We tried that but didn't find landmarks mentioned in advice. We soon found and followed a herd path over to and down to a slide. Went up that slide but it ended. Bushwhacked to the left through thickets and treacherous rocks and holes, and came out on the main slide that went all the way up.
Went again 9/04. I think I left the trail lower. Details foggy. Maybe I contoured towards the brook. Got to brook not far below base of slide!
I like this slide.
