Check -THIS- (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=29223&item=6954488 066&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) out. :(
I'm not sure what to think. I know stuff like this is for sale everyday. But somehow, I have this fear that the highest bidder may not have a true appreciation of the item, who Grace was and what she has meant to the 46ers and the mountains.
Now I never met her, so its probably not fair to charecterize her, but from all the reading I've done about her, it would seem that she would rather that stuff (with a historical significance) go to someone that could put it in front of them and have it transport them (mentally, of course) to windswept summits, endless hours strolling down the trail, the quiet embrace of balsam trees, or even the sweat and grime of a steep trail.
Not just to someone that can AFFORD the final asking bid. Maybe it will, I HOPE SO anyway. Maybe (probably) I shouldn't care and it's not my place to say anything. Still, for some odd reason, I feel SAD. Mostly because I know I won't be in the bidding.
It's not so much that I object to the distrubution of the items in her estate, that part of the natural order of things I suppose However, for some things perhaps a preference should be made to members of the organization she helped found, directed and have been such a huge part of, rather than dumping it into the "highest bidder" impersonal Ebay marketplace. A 46er estate sale perhaps. That's my feeling on it.

That's where I learned of it (list serv).
I can totally appreciate the finacial strain of handling an estate, many people sadly go through this process with their own parents (managing the estate upon their passing). With that said............
We are not talking trinkets or airlooms found in grandma's attic. (perhaps we are, depending on your perpective ;) ), we talking about what could be some deeply sentimental documents or items that have a value that is beyond money. Should go to someone that understands that.
Like I said, I never knew her........... But in a way, I really feel like I did know her quite well. Its hard to explain.

I wish I could afford to own something like this as well as many other similar items. At least that way I know something like this isn't going to be ruined. But I also feel that anyone who can afford something like this, and is interested will appreciate its worth and history-in turn is a true collector and will make a good home for it. Boy this almost sounds like an adoption.

Let's hope that anyone that would be attracted to this on Ebay would understand the significance of the item and the sentimental value of it (I didn't know or correspond with Grace but everything that I ever read about her was wonderful) and will treat it accordingly....what do you all think would be the right place for something like this to end up?

If in any auction a private one. Some should always be saved-maybe a small display behind glass at the Adirondack museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Have her own little section in the museum dedicated to her and the 46ers.

I believe there is as her checkered shorts are on display at the Blue Mountain Musuem along with the old wigwams of Noah John Rondeau.

I completely agree that it should be in the hands of a 46r and not someone who doesn't understand the meaning of it. :?
I agree with these posts. It does appear that there is at least a fair chance that the sale will end up in the hands of a 46er, given the current bidding.

Congrats to Skyclimber for winning this item. I can think of few places that it could go that would provide it with the respect it deserves.
Thank GOD.

Marta,
Congratulations on buying the manuscript. You will apprecaite it more than anyone I can think of. I see that the Troy Public Library has a copy of the actual book, and it's non-circulating, probably a good idea. I need to get over there and take a look at the book some time. It is very near the top of my book wish list.

CONGRATULATIONS! I know many are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief that it ended in the hands of someone who truly cares. I can only imagine your joy! Congratulations to Doug as well. Boy, this eBay thing is a whole other world I've never sampled.
So Marta, if we come to your place to read the manuscript are you going to make us wear rubber gloves?

If I even let anyone touch it. I'll let you read it, but only if you leave a deposit. I got to pay for this now. It wasn't cheap. Your welcome anytime you know. I will even share my letters from Grace with you if your interested.
Received an email from L. John, he'll meet me in Lake Placid this weekend and will hand deliver the manuscript to me. Should be able to get my daughter to drive me over. I'm still estactic over all of this. Seems like a dream come true. Good things finally happening to me.

That's what I got that 180 pound rottweiller/lab for.
I'll just tell the dog, here's a treat for you and open up the front door. The rest would be history. Not Adirondack at that.
