View Full Version : Just not my week............

As many of you can tell, I'm not having a real good week. Had a lot of stress, both here or at work... Okay, who cares, right
Here's where you come in..... This AM, I got up, wrote a couple e-mails and then the ole trusty iBook started making some ugly clunking noises. ADKatie gave me an odd look from across the room and said "that sounds bad, have you backed that thing up lately"....... Ummmm, a couple years ago.
She rushed up to grab the external drive for a little emergency back-up session. Before we could start it though, the ole' Mac froze up. Upon reboot, we got the more hard drive clunking and the dreaded "Blue Screen of death"
Yup, I lost it ALL. pictures, e-mail, music, files, saved PMs (personal & ADK related).... EVERYTHING. Anyhow, the reason I bring this up here is twofold.
1) If any of you IT guys have ANY idea if there are ways to retrieve data from a DEAD hard drive (I really would like someone to say, yes).
2) If you've EVER PM'd me or e-mailed me, I no longer have that info (or your return address). So if you sent me something and I needed to do something. PLEASE RESEND IT TO ME (Randomscooter comes to mind).... Also send me an e-mail at: timd@adkhighpeaks.com so I have your e-mail address again.
Thanks. The only bright spot is that the love of my life (ADKatie) went right out and is buying my a Brand New MacBook. So as much as it hurts, I at least get a new toy.
Anyhow, I gotta go watch football and drink beer to drown my troubles away
and lets hope vBulletin doesn't crash in the next day or so, cuz my last back-up (from a couple days ago) is, yup....... on the dead hard drive.

Hope things get better Tim. :) Doesn't sound like it could get any worse.
Sorry I can't help you, as I am so Computer illiterate, I'm lucky I know how to turn the computer on!

Couple things you can decide to do here dude. One, you can have the drive sent away and they can retrieve the data off it, costs a little, but how much is that data worth to you??? Second, you can hook up the old drive to a newer computer and run it as a secondary so that it's not the primary drive of the lappy/desktop and drag the old info over if you can find it. There's a untility for this from McAfee that retrieves deleted/lost data to restore it. If it's an apple, call apple and they can direct you further on that. We do it all the time when drives fail. One thing you might want to do in the future, since all your data is valuable, is build a cheap home network so you can back stuff up, or start backing up once a month/week depending to a dvd RW. Then file them somewhere safe. Lemme know if there's anything I can do to help, i.e. phone numbers, software help, etc...
The good news is: 95% of the time, data can be retrieved from a dead drive by a good data recover service.
The bad news is: You may have to mortgage or sell your firstborn to get it.

Yeah we tried that at first.... NOGO, did not recognize it. My wife left (to buy me a new computer), and I went to drown my sorrows and watch football to escape. So there I was, on the couch unshaven, beer in hand, mutteirng curse words under my breath.
My sweet little princess (13 year old daughter) comes in to see me in a misurable state. She says "what's wrong daddy". I gave her the abridged version and told her to leave me alone (but grab me another beer first :drink: ).
She walks over to the mac graveyard picks up my dead computer and starts figiting with it. Usually, I'd yell at her for that (perhaps a beating too), but at this point, who cares, it's dead anyway. At least the Steelers are getting stomped. All of the sudden, I hear my dove pipe up from the background and say..................... "What's wrong again, daddy, you'r not supposed to this this picture or what" :drop:
I run over there and sure enough, the background is up and it's operating. Its still making real unhappy noises, but it's running. About that time, my bride shows up with my BRAND NEW computor.... We plug one into the other and it's currently in the middle of a DATA migration. If the old one don't crap out in the next hour or two.................. NOTHING WILL BE LOST. Keep the fingers crossed.
Damn, somebody loves me.................. GOOD KARMA or what :hippy2:

Ummmm, with out a doubt...... At least once a year. :D
Actually, the funny this is I religiously back up these files weekly since the last crash of the site (Dec, 04). Your thought I'd of learned then. Dodged a bullet on this one. The old one sputtered and died again just after backing up the important files.
*** EDIT ***
Katie took care of the rest, But I did help her locate the firewire port on my old computer, then I was in over my head and had to bow out. :D

Looking for something else I just stumbled across this article about recovering lost, deleted files and stuff from DOA hard drives. May be worth a read for future difficulties.

That's a decent site for tech info, it seems they cover a lot of stuff. Now if you like tech stuff there is an online tech show. If you remember the old cable network Tech TV and the show on it called Screen Savers you may like this. This program is produced by PC Magazine and it has some support from Extreme Tech. They reportedly set this up to fill the void left with the loss of Tech TV. There are two podcast per week, Tues and Thurs 7pm eastern time you can watch live but they load them up on their website so you can download them the next day. Sometimes the next day is two days but usually it is the next day. There are about 100 archived shows on their site. Check it out if you are interested in Computers et all. Lately they have been doing a lot with HDTV and testing and reviews of large screen plasma and LCD TV's loads of info if you are thinking about plunging a lot of loot into home entertainment.
