View Full Version : East Branch Ausable River
On our next trip we were thinking of hiking in the East Branch of the Ausable (trail 28 in Trails of the High Peaks Region) and making camp somewhere near or around the junction of the trail that leads up to Pyramid and Gothics (trail 35). We've never hiked that trail before, but the contour lines don't give us much hope of finding a flat enough spot to crash for the night. Has anyone ever done this? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Dory

Dory, that is a beautiful trail to hike, but it is on private AMR land and camping is prohibited. I would suggest camping at one of the designated sites on Gill Brook, just south of Indian Head, and just outside of the private land boundary. It would be an easy hike from there to Gothics.

Dick,
I'm looking at the map and I see where you are saying.
Thanks a bunch!

Dory, the site Dick mentions on the Gill Brook trail is a great base from which to explore the entire Ausable basin from. The boundry between AMR and State property is very noticable, and the designated camping sites are just beyond it. There is a large site to the left and across the brook that is excellent, and a couple more farther up the trail. Indian Head is an easy 10 minute walk from these sites.

I definately recommend the site just off Gill Brook to the left after crossing onto State Land. I camped there a few years ago and did Colvin, Blake, Nippletop, and Dial. Just need to be careful if it is raining as the brook tends to rise quickly and then your trapped :D
Thanks for the info! We've only about a 1/2 day from the trailhead when we come in, so that sounds perfect. Then the next day we're headed up over Gothics/Saddleback/Basin/Haystack and around Panther to camp.
