We had originally set this date to do Lone and Rocky (#'s 37 and 38) from the Neversink River. Not wanting to go swimming :D we decided to head up from the Peekamoose side, lots more vertical, but considering the weather, a better choice. We had no pre-conceived notions about doing both Lone and Rocky, so as it turned out we were satisfied w/ Lone. Coming in off Rt 28 we were amazed when we saw the Esopus. It was sooo high, muddy and looking very nasty. Along Rt 42 the Roundout had flooded the road in several places. All the feeder creeks along the Samson Mt side were full w/ waterfalls and cascades all along the road. Buttermilk Falls was spectacular.
We hit the trail at 9:30--no rain at the time but very foggy/cloudy. We knew we would get wet at some point. The PT trail was a running stream here and there and small ponds in other places. All in all very wet and muddy. It really slowed us down, every rock and root was a slip and fall waiting to happen. It began raining at the summit--pouring is more like it. Off to look for the herd path to Lone. It's pretty apparent when you find it but we soon lost the path as it went into wood. Lots of ferns and plant growth hid it. We would find it here and there, but relied on GPS readings to make sure we were heading in the right direction. There is an incredible amount of fresh blowdown all over the approach to Lone. Made the summit in pouring rain and fog. It was 2:30. We discussed heading off to Rocky but we were at a point where we would finish around 7:30 if we did. It was dark enough at the time and we decided that Rocky would wait for another day. The herd path was easier to follow on the way back and we were out at 5:30. We changed into dry clothes, drove to Buttermilk Falls and headed home.
A total of 11.04 miles 3600 vertical for the day--soaked to the bone, aching knees----what a day--perfect :D
