View Full Version : 2012 Work Schedule on Mt. Adams Tower

In an attempt to make it as easy as possible to plan in advance I have put together this year’s work dates and tentative itinerary. I have also tried to not conflict with scheduled 46r trail work days assuming that there schedule will be similar to the dates they had in 2011.
I look forward to completing the restoration effort on the tower this year. The remaining years on our Adopt a Natural Resource Agreement will hopefully be spent doing normal maintenance, trail work and possible re-route.
There are several contingencies that I cannot plan on at this time that will most likely be confirmed on short notice due to weather and other considerations. This includes the possible air-drop / air-lift of supplies and debris removal. I will definitely need help with this and hope that I can find some volunteers that will be available last minute and most likely mid week.
With any luck at all we will be able to airlift the concrete we need to restore one of the footings on the tower. Otherwise we will need a whole bunch of folks willing to carry 8-10 lbs of concrete to the top, surely this would be no more difficult than bringing the 42 stair treads up a couple years ago :D
Please consider setting aside a day or two to be a part of our volunteer project. I need your help.
Here are the dates and tentative plans for 2012

Saturday May 19th Cancelled see this post (http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/showpost.php?p=190974&postcount=13)- Initial trail work and tower inspection. Though we did a thorough clearing and side cutting after Irene I have heard that there has been subsequent blow down I do not anticipate a lot but would like to get in during chainsaw season.
Please keep in mind that the suspension bridge over the Hudson is down and that the bridge over Lake Jimmy has also had report of damage after Irene.
Saturday June 2nd – Postponed to the 16th due to Rain We will complete the work on the cab including installation of the last couple of windows and reinforcing the floor. I figure best to work high during early black fly season.
Saturday June 16th – Rain date for 6/2Completed Thank You!

Saturday June 30th - Railings and Fencing 99% Completed Thank You!

Saturday and Sunday July 14 – 15 concrete footings formed and poured Well had the concrete been up there that was the plan, We hauled concrete up instead, 140 lbs up another 100 to go. Obviously this task will take several trips over the rest of the summer

Saturday August 11th]- Postponed due to rain, too much water to collect water:rolleyes:Water to top, build forms for footers

Saturday August 25th NEW DATE Just Added- Pour new footers Completed and cut down old cables

Saturday September 15th New Date Trail Work and Misc.Completed All work for the season has been completed successfully. Many thanks to all the volunteers that have been so gracious to lend a hand on a heavy mule year.

Please send me a PM or post the days that you can join us so I can plan accordingly.
Thank you in advance for your help and support.

I will be heading up this Friday the May 4th to do a little reconnaissance for the upcoming season. I do not plan on doing any work just taking a look to scout out any additional projects that may need to be addressed. If you would like to join me let me know. I hope to be on trail by 7:30.

I had the pleasure of SoloJoe's company on the trip yesterday. The trail is actually in very good shape. We encountered only three or four deadfall across the trail and only one near the summit that required a bend at the waist. Though this one could easily be cut by a chain saw it would not be worth the effort to carry one up the trail that distance. An axe or saw will do the trick with less energy.
We worked to open some drainage points and water bars on the soaked trail (it had ben raining all night and was a light rain in the morning). We had success opening and rerouting the water flow in a couple sections, some will require a small shovel and some parts are well.....the Mt. Adams trail:D
There is not enough trail work to dedicate a large crew, but we may be able to get a jump on some of the other work.
I got the go ahead from the DEC late last week to bring the Cement up to the caretakers shop in Santanoni for an airlift to the top during the Colden interior outpost resupply. I broght three bags up with me yesterday and am waiting to hear when the airlift will happen.

Thanks for letting me tag along, Jack. Really fun hike, especially fording the Hudson and the brief bushwhack around Lake Jimmy. The firetower roof is sharp, the steps solid. Improvement since the last time I was up there (August 2010) is major. Great project; kudos to all involved.

Friends,
after going up to inspect the trail and tower on May 4th with SoloJoe plus I have a family matter that will no allow me to be there on the 19th I am going to cancel work that day.
The amount of trail work is a total of clearing maybe three dead-falls and two of those are questionable. And since I can not be there I would not be able to get the tools or remaining windows on site to do any work anyway. Plus I am still waiting to hear if the DEC might need our assistance with the Lake Jimmy Bridge and I am on standby for the airlift of the cement (thank you DEC). If nothing else comes up We will knockout the small trail work and install the remaining windows on the 2nd.
Please Post a reply or send me a PM if you can help on June 2nd.
Thanks in advance

I should be good for June 2nd. Was going to ask if there was something we could do for the bridge on Lake Jimmy... but wasn't sure if it fell outside our mandate.

Either way, ready to go on the 2nd.

Yes there will, and that is why I have the rain dates set up in the schedule. As we all know the forecasts can change rapidly and I am keeping an eye on it. If it looks like a total washout then we will reschedule for the 16th. If it appears that it may be passing t-storms might just haul the windows and some tools up and if we can not do any work at least the stuff will be up there.

They are not too heavy......isn't that specific enough;) and I am no good at that metric conversion thing anyway.
The windows consist of 4 2x4's 2 of wich are 42" in length and 2 are 34" and two shorter 1"x1" 's for the frames.
I would estimate each set weighs aproximately 10-15 Lbs at best. The last time I brought up a set I used my old Kelty big pack to help support the extra weight. The awkard part is remembering that there are a couple of 2x4's extending about 18 inches over your head.
They are dis-assembled but dowled for assembly on top.

This is more like the forecast I had from work, however NOAA, Wunderground and Weather Channel all had the gloom and doom scenario and I based my decision on those. Oh well back in two weeks and I will rely on the forecast from work.

Albany Chapter ADK is running a trip to Mount Adams on Friday 7/13. I'm hoping that there will be fire tower access for some views at the top. I'm not sure how many will sign up and of those that do, how many would be willing to provide mule services, but please let me know if there is something to tote. I'm thinking we can get some concrete up to the top if the need is still there.

I hope the weather is great for you and the group that day, as I am sure you know the views from the tower are very nice. I am hoping that all the concrete is already up there waiting for me. I had dropped off 3 80Lb bags a month ago that the DEC was going to fly up for us on the Lake Colden interior out post resupply. If not I am going to need a lot of help:eek:
Thank you for the offer and if something comes up where I need a hand hauling anything up Friday I will let you know. I had planned on doing a two day work weekend to redo the footer, hopefully that will still be the goal.

Haydk, Kyler, Kenmore, Flying Cow and his Friend Kevin volunteered to help mule up all the lumber and tools for the season on Saturday. We had a great weather day with moderate temps and little to no problems with bugs. The first heavy climb of the season went well as the upper slopes of Adams provided the normal amount of wear and tear on the body and mind as usual. Once on top The crew helped to re-assemble the window frames for installation in the Cab. Kenmore and I installed them fairly quickly (helps when you have the right measurements) while the rest of the crew ....well I think they were eating lunch until I started yelling at them to get to work hanging fencing on the rails:eek: Then of course Ken and I started eating our lunch until we could not stand the evil glares anymore and started drilling the angle iron to install some new railings.
Things are coming along nicely as we got a nice jump on the next project which is to finish the rails and fencing completely.
The one piece of bad news is that the 240 lbs of concrete I brought up to be flown in a month ago was not able to be included in the airlift so I will be looking for a lot of volunteers to help bring the concrete up top. I will break down two of the three 80 lb. bags into smaller more manageable packages of 10 or 15 lbs each and leave the last bag for Cory:D ( your my hero dude:tup:)
All in all the day went very well and of course I can not thank the folks that help on this project enough (I would like to thank more , hint hint) It is truly a unique experience.
Flying Cow took some excellent pictures as did others, please post links if you can.
Thanks

Only got slightly tense when I insisted on reading off the "Canadian" side of the tape measure:). Fortunately things still fit (measure twice - in any system of units you choose, drill once) so no one was flung off the tower ;).

Now that we have hauled up the wood for the windows this week get a slightly lighter load as we need to bring up 6, 43" lengths of angle iron to complete the railings. They weigh about 5 lb's each so it would be nice to have another 5 volunteers give us a hand.
After we get them up top we will finish installing the couple handrails that need to be completed and then finish hanging the fencing on the remaining rails and landings. We got a good jump on this project last time.
Once at the bottom we will divide the cement that did not make the flight to the top into smaller bags for the next foray in a few weeks.
Please let me know if you can help by posting here or send me a PM.

Kenmore and his Friend Mike came down from Ottawa, VieWseeker and I came up from Syracuse to work on getting rail and fencing on the staircase. This was Rob and Mikes first trip to Mt. Adams and the adventure of water crossings especially Lake Jimmy.
Adding to the fun was that besides tools we were also hauling up 43" lengths of steel to complete the railings.
Fortunately we had been blessed with a somewhat windy but otherwise perfect day. The climb up Adams has not gotten any easier but both Mike and Rob soon discovered the payoff on the top was worth the trip.
We got right to work and finished mounting the posts and handrails and hanging fencing on the rails and landings, if nothing else you now feel less exposed on the climb up the tower and having handrails all the way decreases the odgita one might normally experience. We still have a small section of fencing to hang on one side of a flight and a final handrail on one side of the final climb into the cab.
I can not say enough about the people that have come out to help for the first time this year and the people like Kenmore who have been dedicated to the project since its inception.
We still have some major haulage to be done over the next couple of work dates. We have 240 lbs of concrete that has to be broken down into small packages to be brought up top to repair a footing, we will also need to bring and collect water for this project and build a frame for the new footing. I have decided that this will take more than the 2 day work weekend I originally schedules and will post more details in the near future.
The Foundation and I rely on the great group of folks that participate here as volunteers and I thank you for your continued support.

Another beautiful day on the tower. Good company and more steady progress on the repair work. Especially impressed with Rob's "zip ties in the sock" technique as we were tying off fencing on the stairs - clever hands free trick that I'll have to remember for other applications

I added a few of my pictures here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/79095835@N00/sets/72157630407164460/). I have a few more in the "other camera" which I'll download and add to the set tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Mike seemed to enjoy himself. He told me originally he wanted to climb Adams once to see the views so he might as well help out with the restoration work at the same time... but the views were so nice that he'll probably go back again. In that case I'll try to sneak some concrete in his pack for the next trip ;) I'm pretty sure he has often tried to slip some rocks in my pack on other trips so it seems like fair payback:D

I got the 20lbs half stash up to the firetower today, thanks to some good directions from ADKJack, I had not much of a problem finding both ends of the stash and carried the 20lb cache up to the firetower. Had to wade the hudson and remove my socks for Jiminy because I forgot my water shoes but not a big deal. I carried some small trash out on the way back and I noticed a few shards of glass along the ground that I tried to collect. Might of been from the cab or so, it doesn't look like a beer bottle anyway, but flat plate glass, like a window. So not that I think you guys are going barefoot, but FYI. Don't want to see anybody get cut or hurt by them.

Nice drop in temperature made it an ideal day for a hike. I decided I needed some "training" as I haven't been doing enough hiking this summer so I decided to go to Mt Adams. Good hike and I could get some "resistance work" in by hauling some concrete up with me. Looks like some work is being done on the Hudson bridge... but still a long way to go so the ford is still in order. Equally looks like a little work has gone into the Lake Jimmy bridge... but just a little. It seems passable now as a few pieces have been screwed together to make a semi solid platform. It's still pretty rickety so some care is needed when crossing the first couple of sections but I got across pretty much dry.

At the warden's hut I found the sack of concrete. Subdivided it in half. Unfortunately the garbage bags I brought (even doubled up) looked too flimsy to survive a trip so I took what was in the remains of the paper/contractor grade bag up with me and left the remains (+/- 40lbs) in my garbage bags in the wardens shed. Anyone wanting to take up the remainder should bring some sturdy garbage bags to put mine inside for secure haulage.

The hike up the mountain was slower than usual. Nothing weighs you down like a sack of rocks more than... well a sack of rocks! That said, with many breaks to ease the heart rate, I summited in reasonable time. Deposited my load and then "floated" back up the tower for a view. Hike down was speedy and I lucked in to meeting a couple of folks who are doing repair work on the wardens cabin down below. They have a full crew coming in on Tues/Wed to reshingle the cabin so it should be watertight by weeks end. Nice to chat with them and trade information on our two projects. They were just about done with their prep work and had driven in from the mine site (with permission) so they graciously let me ride in the back of the truck on the way out and played tour guide so I got a little extra local history out of the deal - Score!. Very nice to meet them and many thanks for showing me the sights.

So you are looking for camels instead of mules this time?

I'll sign up either way. And I'm not even gonna enter into the discussion about the difference between cement and concrete... Long/slow hike to the summit means plenty of time for that discussion ;)

Yup Camels will work fine as long as you do not intend on carrying the water internaly :puke:
Cement and Concrete starts as one ends as another... symantecs jeez:blah:

Well here is a late list of items that will be handy to complete the masonry work on Saturday:
Battery Operated Jig Saw for cutting form
Small trowel and Float
Masonery Chisel
If anyone has any of these items they can bring with them please let me know ASAP.

The good news is that if we use all 240 Lbs of Cement for the footer the maximum amount of water needed will be 13 gallons. This is based on a .45 water to cement ratio which is recommended for footers in extreme cold settings.
Want to see the math?
240Lbs x 0.45 = 108Lbs Water
108Lbs of Water / 8.33 Lbs per gallon = 12.96 Gallons
Pretty impressive stuff for a non-engineer type person:D

My understanding is that Dunbar plans to spend all weekend hauling water up that hill.

Yes he did volunteer. I just sent him a PM hope it is not to late:eek:

Dunbar was signed in this afternoon - Friday 8/24 - for Adams.

After trying several ways to reach Dunbar Thursday my only hope was that he might have enough cell coverage at some point on his drive from Keen Valley to upper works.
Did not happen:oops:
So on Friday Dunbar made two trips up Adams with 70+ Lbs of water:eek: and just to keep things even he hauled the last couple gallons up today:tup:

His Herculean effort allowed Kenmore, HAYDK and Myself to haul the rest of the tools (Sawzall, Circular Saw, Drill, Sledge hammer, Chisels, Rock Hammers, mixing tub, Floats, Scoops, Trowels, Hardware just to name a few) to the top.
After Dunbar and I broke up and chiseled away the old footing I let the smart guys (not me) work on designing and building the form for the new footer. I cut the straight pieces and Dunbar did the custom cuts to contour to the side of the granite slab the tower is pinned to.
Ken mixed and poured the cement while Haydk worked to rod the mix to keep any air pockets from forming.
All three of these guys worked hard to make the footer as solid as possible.
When that was complete Ken switched the blade in the sawzall and cut the cables that dangled from the tower for several years.
It was a great work day and I cannot thank these guys enough for all their hard work.

Another good work day indeed and another big (concrete) hurdle crossed off the list. Certainly felt a little pressure to get it right with everyones hard efforts to haul up the concrete and water:tup:. Inspite of all the tools we brought this time, we underestimated the incredible hardness of the Adirondack anorthosite. It laughed at Jack's concrete nails and made short work of Haydk's masonry bit... but next time (yeah, when exactly will that be?) I'll bring the (heavier)hammer drill and do it right. In spite of that error we still managed to get things formed up (thanks to Dunbar's creative work with a sawzall) and placed the concrete in good time. Looking forward to stripping the forms and seeing our handywork. Add to that the removal of the broken guy wires and a lot was accomplished.

Thanks to those who lugged the water and concrete mix up the mountain. Another couple of tasks crossed off the " SAVE MT ADAMS" list. Anxious to see how the footing looks, after the form is removed.
