Slide/Corn/ Witt from Wrong Ridge.

Mid Sunday morning ,Doodles and I left Woodland Valley, skirted the PP from the other direction because we wanted a change, and took a ramble up the newly remodeled stream. apparently lots of deer and bear also were checking this out. At a side stream I decided this was the right ridge to be on the left of the slide on Slide. So we went up and up and up. Nice easy grade, lots of ledge scrambles, lots of thick spruce and all the other nice stuff which makes for a nice day. Several times I commented on how long this short ridge was. Of course, map, compass and the GPS were not allowed out. I did check to see if my head light still worked . Peering over the side of the ridge, to our left, we found a :tup:VP. Looked vaguely like the Slideslide underneath us.Then we hit a trail which took us to the summit of Slide in a couple minutes.
No one at the summit, no one anywhere on any summits, just some old Hermit and Jay Bird tracks. Beautiful blue skies, cool, crisp, we could see our breaths for a time on Slide. Trails, springs, bridge in great shape.
From the Cornell Veiwpoint looking back at Slide in the growing shadows, we could see we had been on Wrong Ridge, (not the wrong ridge, as there was nothing wrong about this day)
Back to Woodland Valley just before dark, no headlamps needed, but close.
10.5 miles, 9.5 hours, 4000+'. (5.5 hours for the first 3 miles:rolleyes:)

OK, first of all, I am getting confused. GPS or no GPS, map and compass or only map or only compass. :eek:

Actually we used the up over the first ridge down to the stream, up the stream to the first left then 2 slight rights, past the crook in the tree, past the new washout, go two more side streams, past the rock that the bear turned over then up the ridge method. HOWEVER, the rock that we thought the bear turned over was actually tumbled by the raging water, which put us one ridge short of the ridge of the plan of the day, instead of the very nice WRONG ridge. It was a really, really nice ridge. Bottom line, we were headed for a new route up Slide and that is what we did. That is my story and I'm sticking to it. :razz:

Now as for the many hours it took us to get to the top of Slide. If we didn't play in the water, marvel at the tumbled stones, analyze every fallen tree, identify every four legged animal track and look in every nook and cranny for a napping bear, we would have been on top by lunch time. It was just to nice a day to hurry. Hell we just did what a couple of boys out in the woods are supposed to do. :D

I was on Slide on Sunday - came up from Denning doing trail assessment. I visited the Slide PA before taking the dry creek bed -- I mean WCS trail -- to the summit. It was a Catskill 4000 weekend for me - Slide on Sunday and Hunter on Saturday.
