After several different date changes, we finally headed to the Garden to climb Lower Wolfjaw! This is my 46th high peak so I was very excited. I woke up two hours before the alarm because I just couldn’t sleep! I left to pick up a hiking partner of mine, Jason. I did my first high peak with Jason and wanted him to come for the 46th. I then came back a got my wife, Lisa. My son was going to go as well as he and I have hiked around 15 high peaks together but because of an injury he couldn’t go.

We hit the Garden trail about 8:30 and worked our way across Johns Brooke. We actually kept a very relaxed pace! That’s different for me because I tend to get excited and hike very fast to get to the top. We casually hiked along exchanging stories of the different hikes we completed together. We talked about what we believed were the hardest we completed.

Before we knew it we were already at the intersection with the range trail. The excitement was building as we made our way up LWJ. On our way up we met several hikers coming down. Jason was quick to point out what we were about to celebrate and we exchanged congratulations.

As we reached the top, I had such a feeling of accomplishment. My first high peak was Phelps on January 24, 2009. At that time I decided I wanted to do all 46! With a very time consuming job, three teenage kids and other various responsibilities I knew it would be a goal that would take time. I set a goal of hiking all 46 before I turned 50. This would be 5 years. I reached the top of LWJ on July 15, 2011. It took me 2 ½ years!!

Reaching the peak, I surprised Jason and Lisa with plastic pilsner glasses (no glass allowed) and containers with 46er ale from the Brew Pub!! We poured beers and toasted to the support they and my family had given me during this quest. We took pictures and then sat looking at the incredible views on a beautiful day! We drank beer and ate chocolate! It was awesome!!

I won’t bore anyone with the trip back. Besides jumping in Johns Brooke to cool off, it was uneventful. Jason introduced me to anyone he could as the newest person to complete all 46. Every time he did I swelled with pride!!!
The tattoo is coming next!!

CONGRATULATIONS on your #46! :tup:x46

Awesome and fitting to finish it with family and friends - as evident in the summit photo. July 15 - an excellent day for a finish.

Consider it mandatory to post the tattoo shot when you get your ink done! :D:tup:

Hooray for your accomplishment! Sounds like you had a wonderful day! Glad you had beautiful weather and good friends/family to celebrate with!!!

So what is next? I don't think that once someone has been bitten by the mountain climbing bug that they can ever stop climbing...

That's one of the great things about completing a goal like this. I'm sure I will set other goals (115/115) or something like that but for a while I'm just going to wander around the mountains going up whatever is in my path. No schedule.....no priorities! sort of the Toa of hiking!

Terrific! Congratulations!:tup: ...and my thoughts exactly regarding "what's next?"

Congratulations! A refreshing way to finish the 46.

Consider re-hiking the peaks whose summits may have been obscured on your first visit or exploring a few in winter. Plenty of options available! Enjoy the neverending journey!

Is "46er ale" a joke or real beer?
Where can I get it?

Do you mean this one?

I never saw it in a store.

The OP mentioned their 46er ale was from the Brew Pub (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g48023-d1011891-Reviews-Lake_Placid_Pub_Brewery-Lake_Placid_New_York.html).

46'er Pale Ale from the Lake Placid Brewing Company (http://www.ubuale.com/) is available in and around the Lake Placid area at Price Chopper, Stewarts, and many fine local establishments. :drink:

Althtough I still need to finish the last 24 bottles sampler I bought on July 4th trip.

Next time you're in LP stop at the Price Chopper, go to the cold beer section and treat yourself to a six-pack of the 46'er Pale Ale. I'm sipping one now... :)

Yes, the 46er ale is from the Lake Placid Brewing Company (Brew Pub). SummitHat is correct about locations to get it but I would suggest stopping in for a growler to go!

Congratulations. Very nicely done. I drank a 46er Pale Ale at the summit of Whiteface when I finished. And another back at the parking area.

Definitely the way to go. The growlers are filled with beer made at the brewpub. The bottled beer comes from Utica. Last six-pack of IPA I got was not at all appealing, but the stuff on tap at the pub is wonderful! (different water, maybe?)
