I was not going to write a trip report on my hike up Porter Mtn until I read Gerard's report on Wright. I too was quite embarrassed as it took me a total of 14 hours and 45 minutes to accomplish. How does one write a report on that for real hikers to read? This was a week ago Sunday in the rain. My first ADK hike ever was July 5 last year and that was Cascade. I found that to be more difficult than both Phelps and Big Slide . As you may recall, I ran out of gas on that hike. Well Porter was the same. I do have a bladder that I sip from through out the hike and that does help a lot. The rocks were wet and the mud and water between the Cascade and Porter split was like I never had seen in the ADK's. This slowed me down a lot as well as my having to make sure my poles were planted. I do hike alone as I also don't want to slow others down. Do the math.. I DO hike slow.
A special note to Gerard. I'm not giving up. What I did is ( thanks to a lot of patience from ADK Jack ) buy a Big Agnes Copper Spur tent.. an Earthmate PN 60w GPS with Spot in case I get in trouble to notify help via satellite , sleeping bag, stove and all the other items I need to turn these hikes into 2... 3 or whatever it takes days to get them done both safely and fun. Now I plan to hike most of the summer if this works out for me. Im both older and heavier than you and I say we can do this and enjoy.
I have been reading all I can find on these posts and elsewhere and am planning to do Algonquin and Wright ( do I dare dream Iroquois) July 4 th weekend. My plan is to hike 2.6 miles to a campsite about .5 miles from the Wright junction. Many hikers may have a smile on their face but this just might be day 1. This takes 5.2 miles round trip from the trail head to the summit.. and makes this hike doable. A good nights rest part way is just what I need to hopefully accomplish this hike. Filter some water and start day 2. There are several other hikes with one or more tent sites that I am planning if this one goes ok. Colvin.. Blake maybe or even Giant with a stop at WAsh Bowl. All these over nighters hopefully will open up a lot more choices including Marcy some day.. lso would love to see the Hitchem Up Matildas and Mt Colden.. Any other options you hikers have for me are greatly appreciated. I don't do well with ledges and cliffs though. Laugh as you may but the ledge at the first Brothers is about as hard as I want to get. I can walk all day but don't like ledges.
A special thank you to all of you who have written trip reports and those of you who have given advice. Hopefully you will have lots of ideas for my summer. Also, Gerard.. there is always room in my tent and an extra meal or two in the canister for you. We can do this. As Random Scooter said one time. I may be a slow hiker but I see more !!

One day I will hike Porter in 14 hours and think about this trip report. Thanks for posting and best of luck with the project Bud and Gerard!

Way to go Bud. I sure don't set speed records but when I collected my certificate Memorial Day Weekend not a single person asked "how long did it take you to climb . . . ". Get 'em as and when you can. And if you pass me on the trail, be sure to say hello.

Hey I think I saw you on Porter that day thanks for turning me around and sending me back to the actual summit. We were thinking about you on our drive back home wondering if you were out of the woods yet. Glad you made it safely and enjoyed your trip. I give you lots of credit for your great attitude and perserverance and with those two things you will be able to accomplish your goals in your time.
Take care
Brad

Excellent TR, Bud. I'm glad my TR got you to write your TR. I've had time to think over what I wrote. I guess, I got a case of the downers. I don't plan on quitting the 46. I think the forum would hunt me down. I'll have to reform my plan, but your determination is good inspiration for me, Bud.
If you can have that kind of day and want to stick with it, then so can I. Tell me what kind of beer to bring and I'll join you in the tent...lol.

Bud...did you climb Porter? Don't talk about real hikers as if they are someone else. We is us! Great job!

Way to go, Bud! To my way of thinking, the journey IS the destination!:D Or, to put it another way, I'm not a slow hiker, and I'm not a fast hiker....I'm more of a half-fast hiker.
Keep on keepin' on! :D

Clearly you’ve got great perseverance and a love for being in the mountains. Go get ‘em! At some point, you may even look back on times of struggle with fondness. :)

Thanks for the TR and congratulations for your accomplishment and perseverance.
From the folks I see on the trail, it is clear to me that this forum has more that its fair share of 'super-elite' hikers whose hikiing itinerary, and timetable, do not reflect the objectives, nor experiences, of the average hiker. More power to them for raising the bar and helping to inspire the masses. However, let's not forget that the average hiker's trip is an order of magnitude less 'Olympic' but equally full of memories.

Bud, thanks for sharing. I also have been wondering where you have been and hoping you were still hiking. Sounds like you are well prepared for hiking alone (not something I am very comfortable with myself). Hope to see you out on the trails this year, let us know where and when you are going! Suzie and I are doing Colden (or tabletop if the weather is awful) this weekend. Cheers!

Thanks for the trip report! The reports about people hiking 4 peaks before lunch sure do get boring fast.
