The black flies are out in the Catskills. I was hiking near Hunter Mtn on Thursday, under 2900 feet. They were biting. No one had insect repellent. While these little buggerers don't leave large, itchy welts of their cousins to the north, they are still bothersome as they tend for hidden places, such as under caps, wristbands, sleeves and ears. Oh, let's not forget the eyes. Locals may not be affected by them, however, only those who travel from Metro, Suburbia or out of the area (i.e. Dacks) are suitable bait.
I've got phantom itching. No visible bite, but I'm scratching at something..............
