Sounds like a bear that wasn't doing a very good job of providing for himself - unhealthy probably, and really hungry & desperate.

One of the risks of mtn. biking is that you are swift and silent and can scare the beejezus out of Mr. and Mrs. Bear. Sometimes they don't like that. Especially if they think you are preying on their progeny. Dosn't sound like the case here but something to keep in mind while mtn biking in bear country.
