Hey y'all I just joined today and I was wondering if any of you could refer me to information on how to do the high peaks in 2 weeks - 1 month. Ihave hiked giant algonq marcy gothics chain and many others umpteen times but have never climbed such peaks as marshall etc... (Trailess) I am a geographer so the navigation should be no problems.

So here is my question:

What is the best route to line them up and knock them down? :bang:
Don't get me wrong I love the prisitine loveliness but this is a goal of mine to get out of the way.

Geojoe, welcome to the forum. I take it you meant to get the 46 in one fell swoop, is that right?

If so here's a hypothetical itinerary I worked out a couple of months ago for about half of the high peaks that excludes most of the Great range, Giant, Cascade, Whiteface, Street and Nye Phelps and Ttop but includes just about everything else.

The length (number of nights) could easily be modified by adding or subtracting summits. Support would be very nice in the form of a friend schlepping in some food but a car left at Upper Works could contain some edibles to be picked up en route.

Here it is….

-Dix Range including Spotted mountain either from the Boquet or Lindsay brooks. (5)

-Hunters pass environs. Camp 1 (legal?)

-Up to Nippletop &Dial (Bushwhack?) (7)

- Colvin, (Blake?) (9) (From here you could go to Lower Wolf Jaw and back)

-Panther Gorge via Bartlett ridge. Camp 2

-Gray, Marcy, Haystack. Panther Gorge. Camp3. (12)

-Skylight, bushwhack to Redfield. Uphill Lean-to. Camp4. (14)

-Cliff via the slide. Uphill LT. Camp 5 (15)

-Colden (16)
-Hike to Indian Pass, (optional side trip up and down Iroquois and over to Wright, then up to Marshall). Camp 6 (20)

-Henderson L., Duck Hole, Ward Brook LT Camp 7

-Seymour, Emmons, Donaldson, Seward, Ward Brook LT. Camp 8 (24)

I haven’t checked the distances and vertical to see how realistic each leg would be. An additional rest day might not be a bad idea too. You could go from Henderson Lake towards Upper Works and hike Allen, and the Santanonis while you we at it. (28)

I would certainly want to read very carefully the thread on going ultralite prior to embarking on this trip. I wonder if you could do this with a pack weighing 35 lb. at the beginning. You could have friends meet you en route and bring you food.

You could also check thecavedog.com site for how he did them all in 3 days and 18 hours +. It gives his times and splits so you can see how he went. He had a bit of support but you might be able to take some ideas from it. You might also try to track down Sharpe Swan who did a similiar trip many years ago.

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that GPS in your hand........ *

The Cave Dog's site is quite interesting reading, but bear in mind, he did some serious whacking in spots.
Anybody care to re-hash the pro's and con's of Cave Dog's ADK 'record'?

* apologies to J.M.Hendrix

I don't think I'd use it as a model on how to do the 46 peaks quickly. First of all, he obtained permission to take routes normally not allowed.(eg for Allen, he didn't have a 19 mile hike). Another thing was that the routes were done before the record run, flagging was installed (later removed), etc. IE, his record was not his first round. Neither was Sharpe's.

I went to the website and I was mostly impressed with the measure of fitness that those stats represent. I think he did Seymour from the Ward brook-Seymour herd trail junction in 53 minutes. As for the woodcraft etc. it's hard to tell how much was him and how much was his team. He did however ascend and descend greater than 50,000 vertical feet, without sleep, in just over 3 days. Just that is amazing all on its own.

What he does is athletically amazing! I can't see how anyone could question that. I personally don't mind that he does what he does. To each his own. I have however heard a rumor that maybe someone could confirm or disspell. I heard that he joined one of the clubs (not sure if it was Santanoni or East River) by paying with a check that then bounced after he had completed his run. Anyone know if this is true? I hope not.

Rik, that's what I heard. But I also heard that he did make good on the check afterwards.

Anyone want to let my dog crap in your back yard............. But come on, she's a beautiful dog.

I have no problem with this type of activity, but it is imperitive that those that partake, do so with class, dignity and respect for the lands they traverse. I sure hope that guy that holds the record for the Whites (and also lives in that region) comes over and takes the ADK record away.

He's a class act. What's his name again ;)

Not quite sure I understand about the dog thing but thank you all for the information it is nice to get such a warm welcome and thorough response. I am planning on taking 2-3 weeks total so that should provide a leisiurely pace compared to the cave dog. Not really trying to break any records just wanna officially be an accomplished 46er, 35 sounds about right I can jog at a ten mile pace iwth that so it should be pretty easy to carry. I am gonna go check out the map and plan thanx again.

Rik, that's what I heard. But I also heard that he did make good on the check afterwards.

Well that is a little better. The way it was told to me was as if he had written the check just to get access and then let it bounce. Glad he made good.

My advice is to take your time and enjoy the mountains. Being a 46er is NOT about reaching the tops.

Bravo sir!

That's exactly what I was thinking from the start.

Happy Trails no matter how you do 'em, enjoy yourself and don't hike beyond your abilities.
