Boy it has been a pretty busy and exciting spring for Foundation sponsored events. We kicked off the season with the EMS Club Days in Lake Placid on April 8th and 9th where Myself, Dick and Joanne represented the foundation , answered questions and accepted some donations. This was also the kickoff for the annual Kayak Package raffle that EMS does. Each store picks a not for profit organization to support by donating the proceeds of the raffle sales from that store to that organization. The Lake Placid EMS chose us as that recipient! In return we agreed to partner with them on Trail Days Jun 4th. Due to a misunderstanding on my part we are scrambling to put together a plan for that event. After bouncing some Ideas off Spencer at EMS and Julia Goren from the Summit Steward program we have decided to help Julia and her team by getting a group together to bring some stones to the top of Cascade and doing some general clean up on the trail and summit. No cutting or such just removing debris that has accumulated over the winter.
It seems every time I post something I am asking for help or money, I guess that just comes with the job. However I invite as many as possible to join in the fun. There is really a good feeling knowing that you can and do make a difference in the preservation of the resource we have found so uplifting.
Oh yeah, you might have heard despite some pretty big challenges, the roof on the Mt. Adams Firetower has been replaced. I posted the work schedule earlier in the year not taking National trails day into account so the following week Jun 11th we will be working on Mt. Adams as well. I will post more on that thread.
Thanks

"...bring some stones to the top of Cascade..."
There is a possibility I might be doing cascade this sunday with a group of 6 guys, are the stones at the base yet? we could each throw some in our packs if we end up going... we are doing Giant/RPR earlier in the day, and if they are up for it, Cascade and Porter before we head back to the rest of our camping group in Indian Lake...

Is there an official start time for the Cascade thing or just show up at random?
I was planning on being there around 9 but It may be earlier, Basically anytime will be fine. I imagine I will hang out at the trail head for a while before heading up just to say hello to people and try to talk newbies into the idea that it is a required to carry rocks on your first high peak:twisted:

I hiked cascade this weekend-- the sign is a little confusing. It says to take the rocks to the peak of.. and lists Marcy, and a few other mountains (cant recall the list) it doesnt list cascade on the sign... I'm wondering if people are seeing this and thinking 'hmmm... I would take some rocks, but im not going to climb marcy today..." just a thought.... im assuming its a generic sign that is being used on any trail that this projust is being used for, but might want to add 'and cascade' to it :P
I plan on being there around the same time as Jack. I may be accompanied by several French-Canadian women.....

Haha! I was out on a mountaineering trip a couple summers ago out west. One member of our party had his helmet hanging off the back of his pack in the bowl up position... in which got surreptitiously placed a bowling ball sized rock as we set out. A two hour approach to the foot of the glacier before we helmeted up and the joke was discovered. More entertaining was watching him try furiously to figure out the culprit for the next few days. It wasn't until the last evening that the guilty member fessed up.

Why do you need some extra rocks on the summit?
2. Does "general clean up" mean removal of some loose rocks from the summit?

Yury,
The rocks are used as shown in this photo (http://adkhighpeaks.com/neil/outdoor%20pursuits/cascade_ntd/Cascade%20National%20Trails%20Day_0009.html)to delineate and keep people off vegetation.
By general clean-up I believe Jack means picking up any trash found along the trail. Last Saturday there was next to no trash at all  but I did score an old cigarette butt.
