View Full Version : Black Head, Black Dome, and Thomas Cole Hike

Val, PERFECT dog Garrard and I enjoyed a delightful day in the Catskills today. We spotted two cars - one at the end of Big Hollow Road and the other at the trailhead on Barnum Rd. We climbed the peaks from east to west, taking a steep side trail to bring us to the top of Black Head Mt. to avoid some back-tracking. We enjoyed great views on the spine of Black Head as we walked down towards the col between Black Head and Black Dome. We ate lunch on Black Dome on an open ledge. We were met by more spectacular views as we headed down Black Dome and up again to Thomas Cole. As we meandered along a ridge to the west of Thomas Cole we lingered in a flat, open area abundant with sunshine and wildflowers. We then went up and over two "bumps," Camel's Hump and Caudal, before descending to the Barnum Rd. trailhead. No bugs, clear skies, gentle wind, temps in the low 70's - a hiker's paradise!

Looks like a great hike with good companions. Nice pictures. They do show the contrast between the unprotected signs and the ones in the wire mesh. You probably also noticed that the porcupines like to chew on the Batavia lean-to as well. The little toy peak in the distance of the first two Hudson River pictures is the Cairo Round Top.
The unidentified lake to the south is Colgate Lake. The trail map also shows a larger privately owned Lake Capra to the east, however, as of last summer it was still drained while its dam is being rebuilt (that also appears to be case at present). That open area is west of Thomas Cole and the picture is looking back at Thomas Cole (with Black Dome hidden behind it). The pictures that were labeled "from Thomas Cole" are from a little summit known as the Camel's Hump, which formerly had an open 360 degree view, but it is becoming overgrown.

Great pics and TR! Brought back great memories--This hike including Acra Point(in the opposite direction) was Judy's and my first hike in the Catskills when we were just starting to hike--needless to say we were hooked--we are planning a one year anniversary hike in July.

Dick missed out on the hike last Monday so I will get to do these 3 gems again this summer :tup:
Incidentally, I updated the trail report for accuracy to include the suggestions contributed by all of you - thanks for your help!
