Very last minute but if anyone has an interest in possibly the first winter ascent of the Santa Slide with a summit this Tuesday 3/8 looks very promising. Sun and cold and the wet heavy snow from the weekend could be compressed just perfect.
Got a funny feeling you won't be doing this hike for another week or two.

Yeah No $h!t 2 feet overnight here in Syracuse with drifts up to 4 ft. Can not even imagine what the leeward side of Santa looks like today. So much for forecast's.
Could make it very difficult to get anywhere in the highpeaks this week. Hpofully we will make a succesful bid on SaBaHa. Maybe I will have to make a last minute attempt at Santa to get the W:rolleyes:

I think the cool thing is you may not even be able to tell if your on the slide. I'd say spruce traps won't be much of an issue anymore either.

I'm planning on staying overnight just in case it takes 2 days. Ever stayed at the Spruce Trap Hotel? :D

Yea it is dark and dingy but a bit warmer than you would expect:D
Jack, with a car spot you can do both the Ebrook and Twin Slides as part of the same hike. The snow lingers much later on the Twin so if lucky you do EBrook on rock, traverse the ridge on good crust and butt slide the Twin. The best of three worlds.

Good thing you have had avalanche test training; you may need it.

Yup just stomping around in my yard and watching slabs sliding off roof tops I am concerned enough about Ave danger to call this one off.
Oh well maybe next time.
Wait until April or May. I'll go with you, it's an extremely nice hike when skies are blue.

I did it in Sept it was awesome thats kinda why I wanted to attempt it in winter. The thick stuff up top should be well covered in nice compressed snow

I can't even imagine the snow load up there now. Holy moly. Crazy storm. Over here in the NEK in Vermont, Rt 5A just got wiped out (OK, temporarily, but still) by an avalanche off Mt. Pisgah ... it's unreal here. The upper slopes of Santanoni must be truly incredible. Before all that rain there was already something like six or seven feet of snow.

slides at whiteface are open, they hardly ever open. so I'd guess the avy hazard up north isn't bad

Actually, there was an avalanche at Whiteface on 3/8/2011:

The upper portion of the whiteface slides are super steep and get heavy amounts of wind loading; not suprising about the avy.

I know that the Twin Slide has been ascended and descended by at least three people in winter. I'm sure it's seen many more.
