Anyone see -THIS- (http://cbs13.com/national/local_story_105201739.html) story?

Apparently they were camping when it happened. Apparently Tennesee is beginning to have quite the run on fatal predacious black bear attacks?

Here's another from 2000 (http://www.igorilla.com/gorilla/animal/2000/woman_killed_by_bear_in_tennessee2.html)

I’ve read about bear problems in the GSMNP. My guess is it won’t be long until bear canisters are required there. In some ways the bears there are bolder than the ones in the Adirondack High Peaks.

The April 13th bear attack in Tennessee has been in the news all weekend. I watched one television interview of Dan Hicks, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, who speculated that the bear has some sort of disease that made it violent. According to Hicks, black bears are usually quite shy.

Three of us are going to be hiking in Tennessee in a couple weeks on our East Coast Trip. Camping was also going to be a possibility, maybe we'll just get a hotel room.

Our condolences, from my family to theirs.

I don’t think the bear was diseases at all. I think it was just a bear that had gotten so use to humans that it lost its fear of them.

Very sad story....

Of course my wife showed me the article immediately with a "how dare you endanger our children like this" tone of voice (actually with my tribe it's probably the bears that are more endangered...)

Anyway, does anyone know what the rangers are doing in the ADKs to try to "manage" the bears...I mean I "heard" that the rangers were being more aggressive with bears in the Marcy Dam/Lake Colden area by scaring them out of the area (I quess with rubber bullets or something??)....of course the person I was talking to said the bears would probably just go over to the Slant Rock area...I was just wondering if anyone knew what and how they were trying to deal with the bears (other than requiring cansters).

Thanks,

Dick

I didn't read the story, just the posts. Rogue black bears are always out there. Nothing one can do about them. A couple of decades ago there was a sad story here in Quebec when a black bear dragged a kid out of his tent and proceeded to eat him in front of his companions. We had a canoe trip planned right after that and met up with plenty of familial resistance. We went of course and had a great trip. I would not let a story like that affect my plans.

Just before a trip to the CDN Rockies a grizzly bear ripped a camper to pieces while he lay asleep in his tent. I suppose he didn't remain asleep for all that long. Again, everyone tried to convince me not to go. As if one looney griz was going to get to me in the back country. ???
