View Full Version : People without peaks.
Quite a few people have said they would wait until the gathering drew nearer before committing to a peak.
What I need now is a list of names so that I can get a handle on how many groups we'll have going into this.
Let your future presence be known. Fire away!

This thread is just for those who have NOT CHOSEN a peak yet. If anyone (not pointing any fingers here Bill :D) wants to claim a peak then name your poison on the Peaks 'n' People thread.
My goal is to distribute our hiker power across each of the 46 peaks and to avoid having multiple parties climb the same peaks while other peaks go unclimbed.

I have not claimed any peak, but that is probably how I like it. I like to buck trends, be a non conformist and do my own thing... Seeing that at this point, more than likely I'll be up there that weekend, I'll tag along somebody... maybe keep somebody company if one is solo...
Maybe I'll just climb the big snowbank that is just outside my window here in tupper lake.

I don't have a peak, and am really trying to make it possible to get up there. If I make only one trip this winter, I would like it to be this weekend.

I'm planning to attend and don't have a peak. I'd like to do something on the tougher side (maybe Allen), but don't want to go solo.
We'll be there. We have no peak. We'll sell ourselves to the highest bidder.

We'll be there. We have no peak.
So, how does it feel to go peakless? Pretty daring if you ask me.

Okay I always need to be nudged :)
I had said maybe Cascade with Charlene, but she is out (I see PARR and MB have filled it) and I have been there already (as you know), I said maybe Wright...have been there too!
Having to switch between windows to see what is still open...
Maybe Marcy or East Dix ??
I think my "flock" would appreciate those as choices ?
Given the right day I would go to SED or Allen, but that is
a last minute call ! and probably not appreciated by the rest of the "flock!"

I will be trying to make it up for this gathering, but at best I won't know if I can make it until a few days before the event.
If I can make it, I'd be willing to take any unclaimed peak.
So, how does it feel to go peakless? Pretty daring if you ask me.
I feel bare naked...strpped to the bone...please have pity on me...please claim me...I mean, my peak...I mean my mountain peak... I mean...let's go hiking together...I mean...
My thing is climbing mountains...

If I, as a flock member, have a say...I would say E Dix b/c of the plan to save Marcy for Amy's 46. But it will largely depend upon our sports schedule since wrestling owns Alej and basketball owns Zach.

Not to confuse anything anymore than it already is, but if somebody can do Tabletop and not something else which is unclaimed, I will switch. I can do whatever, I may not like it, but I will do whatever I am asked to do.
Dick, I will see your song and raise you another.

I don't have a peak yet. I don't "need" many peaks for February and so could be persuaded to do something long and not part of any "list". (Last year I did Seymour from the winter parking--on skis even).

As it looks like I'm a go for the Gathering, and don't have a peak yet I am free to ramble up one. I've done em all non-winter, but still new to winter so nothing too intense yet. I can hike along with someone or solo something easy or medium, maybe Saddleback if you still need it? :)

Seward
Seymour
The following people have yet to claim a peak
ADKJack

If nothing changes (yeah right!) then we're two groups shy of putting different parties on each summit but all the summits will be covered.

I won't be able to make the Gathering, but it looks like I should have Saturday morning off for the hike. I need Iroquois for my 46, but am hesitant to attempt it solo in winter, having failed miserably on an attempt this past summer.

Jesse, the current peak list is here (http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12681) and Iro has been taken, which means you could team up with the people who are going. I can hook you up with them.

So while hiking today, in the central area , Alpine 1 and I decide we better sign up for Panther as South Dix is now taken. We were actually going to Panther and Couch today but the forecasted cold with the dog scared us away (ha ha little did we know it would turn out to be not cold!) So now I see the "Master" has signed on for Panther...
My poker face reads (Yeah, Lady Ga Ga I am not!) I secretly want to go to the WEST but that is a big gamble .
I hate to commit to something and then bail...maybe you could let us know (PM) who might need/want company and we can choose from that list???

I'm coming with Dick and Joanne. I'm new to the group and to New York (Delmar near Albany). I'm a transplant backpacker from Minnesota whose backpacking focus has been on the John Muir Trail in California (I am this year's lead moderator of the 850 member JohnMuirTrail@YahooGroups.com group), which I've done three times and will be doing this summer again but with Dick and Joanne and some others.
Since moving to the Albany area, I've joined just about everything hiking related and paid up (lifer, Catskill 3500; lifer ADK; one year AdkHighPeaks; one year Adk46er; one year Appalacian Mountain Club; one year NY-NJ Trails). I want to do as much weekend hiking as I can between my summer hikes in the High Sierras. I will be cutting my work days back to 4 days a week after I start Social Security this coming October and look forward to either 2/3/4 day weekends (alternating them but maintaining a 4 day work week) between my long summer month-long hikes (in 2012, I'm going to a 2 month summer hiking schedule).
Anyway, enuf rambling for my intro here. I want to do an easy peak as I've gotten a little out of shape since I've been so focused on moving from MN to NY, it's taken me about 5 months of work to do this. I look forward to meeting as many people as I can and I do want to limit myself to an easy peak that somebody else wants to do with me (I don't want to do anything alone starting out).
If any hikers are interested in doing the JMT, I've been doing long thru-hikes in the High Sierra now for 11 years (between the High Sierra Trail and the John Muir Trail) and know that terrain well. I organize annual group hikes for no fee (I don't like hiking alone and when you organize long distance hikes for nothing, you end up making a lot of friends you keep for life).
I'll be equipped with Snowshoes, crampons, and Kahtoola MICROspikes and hiking poles (thanks to the hiker loaning them to me this weekend via Dick's request). If the peak is easy I may not need the Crampons.
Looking forward to the weekend and to the experience and the people. I find up state NY incredibly beautiful (and warmer than Minnesota too!)
--Roleigh
Now that the only remaining peaks are the 4 Sewards anyone should feel free to contact the person whose name appears next to a peak they want and see about joining them for the hike.
Once a team forms in this fashion you must realize that you are now hiking partners and responsable for each other. You should talk about hiking speeds, any health issues you might have, location of medications in your pack, gear and any other concerns - BEFORE the hike, not at the trailhead.
Also, double check with each other the trailhead location and start time. Don't confuse meet time with start time. If you need 30 minutes to get organized then show up 30 minutes ahead of the start time.
If a member doesn't show up I think a 20 minute wait beyond the pre-arranged start time is adequate before heading out without them. Leave a note on your windshield or in the sign-out register indicating the time you started.

have no idea... It starts from Marcy Field at the overfloat garden parking lot. I read it in the High Peaks guide book and it goes over Blueberry towards Portor. Probably not used much in winter... and probably less probably now with the recent snowfall so unless somebody heads there this weekend, might not be broken out.
It could be a friday night decision since I have to go by Marcy field to get to RandomScoots anyway, I could check it out on the way there...

I would be willing to play sherpa on any of the following (in order of preference):

Street / Nye
Lower / Upper Wolf jaws
Gothics / Armstrong
Haystack
Saddleback
Basin
Redfield
Marshall

I think the crew heading into the Dix Range could use a sherpa. After that,
- Haystack, Basin, Saddleback

Gothics and Armstrong are now available.
With all the snow that's been pounding the High Peaks lately if I was doing a peak that was in proximity to another one I would make sure I co-ordinated with whoever was doing that peak.
Working as a single team breaking trail up to the split I would rotate leaders every 200 paces.
I would also get lots of rest and stuff my face in the 2 or 3 days leading up to the hike.
Should be a really fun day of full blown winter hiking. :D
