Keep plugging away at the local spots, today's hermit hike was to Alander Mtn by way of the South Taconic Trail from Bash Bish falls. I made a quick pit stop on the Mass. parking lot for Bash Bish falls to check out the overlook but then I parked at the main trailhead with only 2 other cars in the lot.. then I walked past a large wedding celebration to hit the South Taconic trail up over Bash Bish Mtn which is pretty much unassuming and nothing special, to go 2 miles south to Alander, through the Quartzite and the little escarpment views towards the Hudson Valley with the catskills being a backdrop. On Alander, you know you are there when you're greeted with hundreds of blueberry bushes and open slabby rocks. And a nice cool cabin. First one today, I sign the log book and think it would be a helluva winter spot to camp out in... After some meanderings to see what peak is the true summit, I zoom out the way I came.

After getting back to my car at the bash bish trailhead, Ihead north on the cedar brook trail, following the pretty but mosty dry brook upstream. Water is crystal clear, must be nice in the spring but a little dangerous as the trail crosses the brook a couple of times. Heading towards Sunset rock which has a very good view of the real escarpment of the Catskills.. I meet some other hikers at the rock and we share the view.

On my way back, I take the S. Taconic./Sunset Rock trail back to the Copake campground, coming across a really long almost 3' long timber rattler partially across the trail (see pictures). I take a long branch and get it across, in which it curls up and shows to me that he is indeed a rattler!!! He doesn't look too happy to be herded across the trail, but he manages to abide by my stick. Didn't see another soul so nobody to warn thinking it's probably a popular hike for campers...

But back at the car, was thinking of checking out the Copake iron works but hunger got the best of me and I headed into Lenox for some pizza.

Great pics of the snake. beautiful markings, as long as it's from a distance. I love the picture of the laurel tunnel!

Nice TR and photos. There is a lot of great hiking in them thar hills; snakes not withstanding.:D:eek:

Lest we or anyone forget (or if they never knew); Bash Bish is not merely a waterfall, Indian maiden, and a legend. It is also a mountain. So it is nice to see you credit this oft overlooked mountain in your TR title.

The cabin on Alander was looking neat and in good condition in your photos. Nice to see that it is being maintained better these days.

Yeah, that Cedar Brook trail may occasionally be impassable per the trail sign warning -- as it is in the stream at times. But it is generally quite passable in the usually dry Taconics.

Nice to see you are liking the new digs. Talked to some people about you and your new location up in Mass while at Galehead Hut the other night as they were from around there. Nice snake encounter.....jealous I must admit!

Yeah, I really like my digs here, as I can walk to downtown Lenox and walk to Kennedy Park where I can walk/"hike", MTB (mildly technical but fast!) or XC Ski and I can still bike to work and be a little closer to the ADKs, closer to the Cats and a LOT closer to the Whites.. It's really very central. As a tourist destination though, I've noticed that the cost of living is comparible to northern NJ, real estate is cheaper but than they've fallen in northern NJ too but I suspect property taxes are cheaper. Gas is still cheaper than NY.

Mark, the cabin is in OK shape, I mean it hasn't been burned to the ground yet with the wood stove there, but it isn't exactly homely clean either. It has mouse problems... But it is pretty cool that they have a cabin that is first come first serve with a wood stove there and is still around.

Nice TR report Jay - you're definitely exploring new territory. Big snake! And the hand written signs are quaint. I'm just surprised you didn't test out the croquet set :)

RE; the croquet set: They weren't setup there when I left the trailhead, but people were milling about getting the chairs and everything else setup, when I got back from Alander, the people were gone but the set was standing there and I thought I'd get a picture just for fun....

Procook, I hope you had nice things to say about me... You should stop by someday, maybe you can do the entire AT in MA in one day... of course, there's the TCT traverse... I've noticed that the trails here are fast, could easily be run cause the rocks are mostly quartzite and pretty good and grippy and lots of pitch pines on the ridge that make for soft pine needles...
