Hiked up with Steph and the notorious Dritter, although Steph and I were a bit late so Damon started before us (we met him on the trail near the summit as he was descending).
The trail starts out following the old firewarden's road however after 5-10 minutes a new trail cuts to the left. We chose to follow the new trail instead of the old firewarden's road.
The new trail is very gradual and actually loses elevation in a few places. It makes liberal and I believe very excessive use of switchbacks. The scenery however is acceptable as the woods are very nice through here so I would say it is worth giving this trail a go unless you are in a hurry.
Higher up the trail rejoins the Firewarden's road where typical old road conditions (rocky) exist.
The summit is open with lots of rock outcrops and uniform height trees. The tower on Averill is visible from the tower on Lyon proper. No summit benchmark was found at the apparent high point. Lots of nice views of the high peaks as well as toward Montreal (too hazy).
This peak is on the ADKHH as well as the north east p2000 lists.
We chose to descend on the fire wardens trail which is still a perfectly nice trail and we noticed several other people using it.
